97 Honda Accord. Dash & taillights blow fuses. I have eliminated the rear part of the car, completely removed stereo, entire shift console, instrument panel, heater controls, all bulbs, replaced dimmer switch, and headlight switch. I have removed every relay in the entire car, I even clipped off the wiring to the front corner marker lights in case they were shorting inside the connectors. I am basically down to a problem with the harness itself. I have heard of a possibility that a bad ground could cause this. Are there common wear spots in the harness where insulation can get worn off. I am certain this was not caused by work done to the car or physical damage. The fuse just blew. Any help is appreciated.

So in the end it turned out to be poorly cut, very hard to see leads to the visor mirrors that eventually made contact with ground. It took eliminating almost every system one by one in the entire car wire by wire before I located it. Using the wiring diagram helped to completely eliminate systems and generate new ideas, but it was a bear. Total time: 6 evenings, around 19 hours labor...the price for rebuilding a stolen and stripped car.

1997 Honda accord DX, the dash lights and running lights don't work and it keeps blowing the 15A fuse under the hood. We've replaced the two relays under the hood, replaced the headlight switch on the steering column, disconnected all of the running light bulbs and the fuse still blows. Thanks to petejanemark, we pulled the driver side visor, disconnected the wire connector to the lighted mirror and the dash lights and running lights started working. Upon inspection, the insulation on the wire inside the visor had finally wore through and was grounding out. You could probably tape or repair the wire, but we left the mirror disconnected, taped over the metal connector and reinstalled the visor. Wow, no other website mentioned checking the visor wire, thanks Pete!

Bad grounds cause weak dim lights and intermittent operation a positive circuit shorting to a metal ground causes shorts and blown fuses burnt connections. You need a wiring diagram for the circuit and need to trace the wires and look for a short. Or if there is no short in the wiring and this vehicle uses a module computer for the lighting the module could be faulty.

fuses blow because of dead shorts or excess current draw
to blow a 15 amp fuse indicates a dead short

Gauge cluster lights won;t light - replaced cluster, dimmer switch - did put new stereo in car? Fuses, bulbs all good. What could be the problem?

When you put the stereo in, what did you do with the red wire with a green stripe? The aftermarket radios don't always use these, so you have to wrap the ends, depending on whether or not you used a wiring harness. If that wire is shorted on the chassis, it will blow the dimmer fuse.

The AC/Cigarette Lighter/Stereo is out in my 97 Honda Accord. Is this a fuse problem or something worse?

For all to fail together it is a fuse. If the fuse blows again it is almost a certainty due to the AC beginning to fail. Try running the car without AC and see if the fuse survives. If it does and then blows as soon as you use the AC then it is likel that your air compressor is need of an overhaul

No taillights, no dash backlighting, no headlights-on chime; all other lights okay

The taillights are commonly connected to the dash light circuit ( so you can be aware when they do not work ).
Start with the fuse box. Read carefully for the correct fuse to change. Sometimes they have a strange name associated with them. Turn the lights off before you change the fuse otherwise they may blow even if the circuit is OK. If it blows again you need to look further to find a shorted wire. ( Most likely in the boot, near the taillights, a wire has been crushed or damaged.

My Headlights, taillights, and lights on my dashboard/gear shift do not come on, the only lights that work ar the brights!

Fuses. Check those in the interior fuse box (left kick panel, below the dash--fuse chart on the cover) and those in the engine compartment fuse box (far upper left as you face the car). If, after you replace anything that has blown, it blows again, that would suggest a short somewhere in the system, or a bad light switch.
Hope this is of some help.

Have headlights but no taillights

Put in a radio lately? - you'll probably find that the fuse is blown for the dash lights; and the stereo is wired incorrectly - if no radio - then there is a control module that controls the lighting I think - put in fog lamps either? I'd bet it was either fog lights or radio incorrectly installed, or control unit. You'll find that the dash lights and tail lights are usually connected (on same circuit). Be sure to turn the key "on" and check both sides of all fuses with a test light. If that turns up nothing, then a wiring diagram and some time are required....

No dash lights after i put in stereo

Sorry to hear that.... Now, take it apart and find out what you unplugged while you were in there. Also, check that you did not tap into something you should not have for power, and that you did not blow a fuse by accident!
