V6 or I4 engine? xe = i4? bad tranny.? low or too high ATF levels. clogged bottom filter before pump, (shifts hot?) RE4 trans is 4speed electronic RL4 xxx trans is manual only this side of your tranny has a tag is it RL/RE4 or or 3speed.

no real speed until 20 mph indicates your transmission is starting in 2nd gear. this would be the ab/c solenoid code. try starting off and manually pulling the shift lever down into 1 at approx 15mph bump it to 2 then at 20 25 bump to drive, if trans shifts under these conditions, you do have a bad solenoid, some solenoids can be replaced just by removing trans pan, without removing valve body. you are right to think it is a sensor. trash can get into the shift solenoids and make a trans act funny. you could drop the pan and replace the solenoids located in the back of the valve body.
well i would check your universal joint's put the parking brake on and block the wheels put the car in n and reach under truck and see if there is play in universal if so need replacement if you have two peace drive shaft check your center support bearing good luck if these check good it could be in transmission good luck redoil
