1995 Saturn SL1 Manual Transmission

Sounds like the friction surface of the clutch disc is slipping. You would have to install a new clutch (clutch disc, pressure plate, and clutch release bearing), and have the flywheel surface cut and polished back to perfect smooth by a shop.
Manual transmission gears don't slip like automatics. And lack of fluid in the transaxle or the hydraulic clutch system won't cause this either.

Key is stuck in ignition of 1997 saturn sl1, will not turn.

I saw a similar post with similar problem with another Saturn. The dealer told him it was a bad battery. My guess here is it is a bad Ignition. However, just to appease the dealer side, disconnect the negative cable from the battery and connect the jumper cable to the negative cable and positive cable. If it was the battery causing the problem the key should come right out. My guess is you need to replace the ignition as one or more of the tumblers is not releasing as it should.

I'm trying to get the battery out of my 2001 Saturn SL1.

if you look at the battery from the top, you will see on the side closest to the fender (away from motor) that there is a bracket that runs along side the battery. It is very hard to notice. You need to take a 10mm socket with a 6" or longer extension, and remove the nut that is on top of it, right at the bottom inside edge of the battery. This may be hard to see, and hard to get to. Unfortunately, that is the only way to remove the battery on that car
