SOHC 4.0 - cranks with no problem. Will immediatly idle up to high rpm and then back down to almost a loping idle. Then will die. No problem restarting. (1998 mountaineer)

Clean out the throttle body carefully and replace the auxilliary air idle valve. There is a resetting process for this valve so dont just fit and hope!
Check on Google or forums but i think ...when fitted you turn on ignition but dont start car , then put the accelerator pedal slowly to fully open, hold it for a min then release. start and drive car until warm and the recheck.
If the idle is high then settles it is not an air leak. It is something stuck that then releases which is only throttle flap or idle valve. It is always a goid idea to replace fuel, oil, air filters on normal service intervals.

change plugs and wires my kia had slow acceleration like loss off power thought it was clutch new plugs and wires solved this also us brake cleaner on cable for throttle
high idle can be associated from a vacuum leak in the system- brake booster hose loose---vent hose cracked /broken or not connected. Check for broken gasket from manifold to carby. Check that the vacuum hose for the distributor is connected and not cracked
this is what they call engine loping u need to take it to a mech for proper diagnostic,,, bu check first spark plugs and wires mostly culprit though is timing bad,,,, bad timimg gear/belt/chain which ever is in yours.
normal for an engine to start at elevated rpm and then die back as it takes a few seconds for the ECM doing it's sensor checks and idle back to the correct idle speed
check the idle rpm with an external rpm counter as most in dash units are inaccurate at rpm lower than 1000
as for the temperature
If you have a climate control module, it uses a mixture of heater and ac to maintain the temperature that you have set
so check it for operation
Loping idle like this is most likely cause by an intake manifold or vacuum hose leak. Check your vacuum hoses for any cracks or disconnected hoses. If they are fine, then listen for air noise around your intake. A length of tubing can be helpful.
