Carb automatic choke sticking closed or your float setting too high causing flooding engine.

Have it checked for free trouble code at Autozone or O'Reilly's . Sounds like a sensor or clogged Cat converter. But it is running rich. The engine temp control sensor or a bad O2 sensor can also cause this.

Sounds like its running rich? have you checked all the injectors? maybe one of them went faulty. but I would also check the radiator to make sure theres water in it and you dont have a small leake in the head gasket thus causing more condensation and sutt coming out of the tail pipe.

Engine trouble with my 1983 toyota pickup

Toyota engines have a built in TSTV- thermo controlled vacuum system where vacuum is applied to the choke system in various levels as according to the temp. of the engine. If the TSTV is faulty or if the vacuum pipes are incorrectly placed then you have a choke which is not opening up properly. Fuel is thus not burnt completely and due to the incomplete combustion there is a formation of soot on your exhaust. Try to get the choke to open up in relation to the temp of the engine. The fuel/air ratio alse needs to be checked ( idle mixture control) once you have the vacuum system working properly.

1983 toyota pickup truck runs rough when the motor warms up

It would appear that the Black smoke is unburnt fuel, meaning Spark or timing could also be out. Check you plug and point gaps. If you rebuilt the carby, float level is crucial also check the needle and set to ensure it is shutting off the fuel, if it is not shutting off, it will just flood the engine. Not sure what carby you have but I woud pull out the jets/power valve and replace them. Some carbys have a small ball bearing to control fuel, if that was lost that could be it. Pull up an exploded diagram of the carby and do it again. I know its time consuming, but it will be peace of mind. Good luck

Black soot on spark plugs and exhaust pipe. Vary low gas milage 9 m/g. Has good power. Starts easy and runs good. 1984 Toyota pickup. has new rebuilt carburator and new cat. convertor.

burning rich. Add SEAFOAM to your tank(at part stores everywhere) to a tank of Premium gas, and add every 3000 miles to fuel. this will help the carbon and running rich problem.
