Should be a grey wire going to the top of fuel tank connects to fuel guage / when the guage in the tank reads grounded it shows full , no ground it shows empty. if you ground that grey wire and the guage jumps to full then faulty guage if nothing maybe bad ground on the tank itself. the guages are a reostat like a tyco race car gun the more it moves the more it grounds .. good luck

SOURCE: gas gauge on a 2000 grand prix

I have a 2000 grand prix and had the same problem. I got it tested and everything tested fine. Then someone told me to replace the gas cap. I replaced it for about $10 and it worked. Might want to start there before you put too much money into it.

SOURCE: haunted gas gauge? 1997 pontiac grand prix se

The fuel guage sender on this model is faulty. Some were recalled when new. You need to replace it with a new one. It's attached to the fuel pump just outside the tank. It's a good idea to replace the pump while you are at it since you have to drop the tank to do this. The sender is part of a wire harness that comes with the OEM pump assembly. I strongly urge you to use the AC Delco OEM part for this repair. There are much cheaper after market pumps out there but they come with many complaints of Hard Starting and poor performance.

SOURCE: the temperature gauge on my 2002 grand prix dose

the temperature sending unit on a 97 grand prix 3800 gt(which is also the coolant temperature sensor) is not accurate. the sending unit part of this sensor only sends info to the guage on the dash. the coolant sensor part sends info to the computer of the car. it is located under thermostat and somewhat difficult to get at. i had put a brand new one in and my temperature on my dash is all over the place---even with good thermostat and properly bled system. when i hook up a scanner to my computer, the coolant sensor is sending the computer(ecu??) what seems to be the right temp. anywhere from 194 degrees to 217 when hot. the guage however on dash go from 160 to 260 in less than 2 minutes.

Gas needle on 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix keeps going down when out of gear help.

If it works in drive but not park, sounds like a short in the harness. A mechanic would check for power and ground at the tank and work back to the gauge.

Do I have to remove the gas tank to inspect/change the fuel pump on a 1991 pontiac grand prix?

Unfortunately, yes. It's a pain. I own a 1991 Pontiac grand prix SE 3.1L.

My fuel pump problem started when I ran out of gas (gas gauge was offset) Of course it shuts off w/o gas but it will more likely kill your fuel pump and clog the $#!t out of your filter.

If it makes a buzzing sound under the vehicle w/o the engine running, near the trunk area, replace it along with the filter.

Gas gauge not working

my 97 grand prix had a habbit of doing that.. it wasn't much though it would bounce between wherever it was at when i started to an 1/8th of a tank below that. depending on how much it does it and how far it bounces around i would have the sending unit checked (much cheaper if you are mechanically inclined and can do it yourself)

Incorrect fuel gauge reading or no reading

While it could be a bad gauge, as it's an electric gauge, most likely it's the sending unit inside the gas tank. Make sure your fuses are good, and your ground wires are clean and tight, especially under the car. If all that checks out, you might want to drop the gas tank and pull out the sending unit.
