2007 Stavic. While driving, why does engine light turn on at same time temperature drops as though motor has turned off?

Whenever engine light turns on, it is best to get it scanned for diagnostic codes. It could be loose electrical connection to the engine coolant temperature sensor.

Would really need more details on the vehicle. Petrol / diesel etc

Is the engine management light on? Are there any fault codes?

Power lose while driving is most likely to be caused by the mass air flow meter, leak at a vacuum or intake hose, turbo leak etc.
