Recently snapped the gearbox linkage cable and replaced as advised by kia.before i replaced the cable there was a slight noise on the gear box sounding like a bearing whining noise when changing down my gears.since i have changed the cables this noise has gotten worse and was wondering if it had something to do with the ajustment of the cables as kia told me not to move them but obviously in time the old cables will have stretched slightly.all advice would be appreciated

remove the battery lead. remove the drive shaft at the diff flange and remove it from the gear box. undo engine mounts/ cross member at rear of gear box if necessary. undo bell housing bolts around rear of engine. remove gear lever if stick shift . If not remove linkages at gear box Pull gearbox rear wards and lower to the ground . A point of interest here is that when a clutch sudders it is advisable to firstly check all the engine mounts are not soft as this affects the clutch operation especially if you have a cable operated clutch
problem with linkage cables. get under vehicle and select a gear
manually with engine off, then climb inside, start up with clutch
pedal depressed, release clutch, if nothing happens, problem in gearbox, if it takes off, problem with linkage cables.
To change the gear change cables unpop the sliver center shroud un do about 10 self tapping screw. un do 4 13 mm bolts on gear stick bracket. this is all after you have taken gear knob off . which is held on by cable tie. then pop the bonnet remove air box. and disconnect cables red and black one on gear box linkage. and in side un do inspection plate brhind centre console .
Unfortunately the problem will need investigating. There must be a problem with the flywheel / clutch assembly or the gearbox itself. The fact that you can move the gear linkage indicates that there is no drive in the gearbox ( ie not turning). The only items that effect this are the clutch / flywheel assembly or the primary shaft in the gearbox. The gearbox will have to be removed and the above checked.
Among the things you have to remove are:-
The gearbox oil
The side shafts
The starter
Some cover plates
The gear linkages
The clutch cable or automatic fluid hoses, (whichever applies)
The speedometer cable/wires
The reverse light wires,
The mounts and possibly one engine mount (support the engine)
Once EVERYTHING has been removed, the box has to slide sideways for about 4 inches before it will come free. (They say removing an engine or gearbox is one way to see how long you can stretch certain cables and wires with your lifting equipment).
Easy problem. Check your clutch fluid (it is most likely low) master cylinder on the front of the gearbox most likely has failed, causing you to try and put it in gear, but then you broke the shifter cable. Easy fix.
If the clutch feels ok and isn't biting right at the bottom or right at the top then it sounds like its time for a recon or 2nd hand gearbox to be fitted.
I recently fitted a 2nd gearbox to a seat ibiza GTi which actually has the 2.0 Golf engine fitted to it and it wasn't too bad at all, but it is adviseable to fit a clutch kit whilst the box is off.
