Whining or grinding noise/screech when we turn the wheel

When we turn the steering wheel, it makes a whining noise, almost more of a screech. Lately, when the car first starts, it's harder to turn the wheel. Once we get going above 25 or so mph, it gets easier again. We are thinking it's the power steering pump, but aren't sure. Or, if we just refill the power steering fluid, would that solve it?

Dear Screech And Whine......What you have described is definitely a power steering concern. And yes the fluid is low.....thanks for the accurate problem description!! You are correct on the filling the fluid part also......but keep in mind that if your power steering fluid is lo that you might very well also have a ps leak too.You can do a visual check and trace all of your ps lines to make sure that no fluid is escaping anywhere.....You ae more tha welcome to get back to me if you have any further questions...HOPE I COULD HELP!!!

My power steering pump pulley is making a terrible noise, it just started sunday and we have just replaced the idler and ac by pass pulley. The power steering pulley noise comes and goes...?

It sounds like the power steering pump itself is bad. You mentioned changing the pulleys. Does the vehicle screech or whine when turning the wheel in a parked position? There is also what is called the power steering gear box. They do sometimes go bad as well. I would also look for any leaks in the power steering hoses.

Hi,i have just bought Audi A496 1.8Ltr and power steering makes whining noise but no leak found, please help, thanks & cheers.

if it is whining -- then this is a sign that you need to add power steering fluid to the reservoir.
there will be a hot and cold line on the small dip stick in the reservoir,, it is best to fill while the system is cold,, fill to the cold line and this should stop the whining.

I don't know what the problem is with it, but it only makes the whining noise when I'm turning right, and lately it has been really bad, and it's embarising....

The screeching could be caused by low power steering fluild, but since it seems to occur only when turning right, you may have a defective pressure relief valve.

What is causing the steering wheel to make a loud noise when I move it?

Hi, if it is making a whining, screeching type, grinding noise, check the power steering fluid level. It will show marks on the cylinder where the level should be when the fluid is hot and cold. Also, not knowing the year of the auto, check the belt or serpentine belt if that applies to your auto for wear, cracking, brittleness, and so on. The bearings may also be going out on the power steering pump. Check these things first and keep me posted on the out come.
Sincerely,

Screeching noise

If your C/V joint is going bad it will make a nasty clicking sound and get louder the longer you leave it unattended. If this noise went away it could have been something stuck it the moving area of your wheel and just worked itself out.Keep an ear out for the noise to return,it it dosen't come back be happy.

Engine noise

If it gets worse when turning the wheel at a stop, then it's the power steering pump. Could be the power steering fluid also. Check your belts for wear or damage. The idle pulley will make a constant noise, sometimes whining sometime screeching. To check idler pulley it is best to remove belts.
