Wont shift out from second gear

It is in "limp home mode." This happens when transmission errors occur, such as P-O700. You can try disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes, reconnecting it afterwards, and seeing if that clears the code and the problem. I have a 2005 Dodge Stratus that sometimes will shift into 2nd gear and sometimes won't. The codes read P0700 and P0888.

Question edited for clarity. Code are P-Zero, not P-Oh (letter)

I have a 2005 Dodge Stratus error code P0700 when the light comes on it wont shift out of 2nd gear. Where is the sensor located?

Code 700 is a generic code that means there is a problem with the transmission control module. It could be the module, or something else causing the module not to work correctly.
You would need a scanner and a repair book to get the test procedure.

My 05 Pacifica went into "limp in" mode which means it is stuck in 2nd gear. I took it to AutoZone and put it on the code machine. It pulled up P0700, P0715, P0731 and P0733. I changed out hte Speed Sensor...

Well code 700 is a generic code that means there is a problem with the transmission or the control module. Code 731 is for a problem with first gear which would explain why it stays in second gear.
Someone will need to check the circuits involved with first gear and the trans control module. A shop manual will be necessary to get the testing procedures.

Shifting

Is your code reader capable of reading U, C, and B codes? The speedometer doesn't get it's speed reading from the wheel sensors. It gets it from the transmission. Not shifting past 2nd gear means your transmission is in "limp in" mode. It prevents shifting to avoid further damage. I see a transmission repair shop in your future.

Transmission faul code po700

(DTC) CODE # P0700....Transmission Control System (MIL Request)

Translation: Transmission Control Module (TCM) Malfunction or Failure.

P0700 Information Code

The Transaxle Control Module (TCM) monitors the malfunction of sensors and actuators relating to transaxle control. If any malfunction is detected, the TCM informs the PCM by sending a signal (P0700 code). P0700 means that a code has been set in the TCM.

This code is for information ONLY. If this code is present, check for transaxle codes.

So basically, the P0700 code is telling you to check the TCM for a transaxle DTC. The TCM can not turn on the check engine light so it has the PCM do it. It needs to be scanned with trans capable scanner to see what the trans code or problem is. You should have 1st, 2nd, and Reverse because the car is operating in limp-mode. Since you said the speedometer doesn't work, my guess would be a faulty (VSS) vehicle speed sensor.

The PO700 code is a generic transmission code. You would need access to a proper scan tool to check for transmission codes. However if you speedo isnt working, it sounds as though you have a bad output speed sensor. This part runs about 60.00 from the dealer, and is fairly easy to install. No speed signal will put the transmission into limp mode, and keep it stuck in 2nd gear.
