2000 wrangler 4.o manual-made offer on used one on start and stop -sloppy in drive train -clunk--should I be concerned? Shifts fine-runs well 145000 miles When lever in 2 wheel high is it in 4 wheel...

2 wheel high is rear wheel drive only. next one back is 4 wheel high.
Only position i wouldn't worry about is 4 low ...they usually get weird because it's used very rarely (NEARLY NEVER). There is no dipstick on a stick transmission you need to remove a plug on the drivers side of the unit to check that. The clunk and looseness is of concern as it could be a bad universal joint on any one of the driveshafts or axle shafts, or it could indicate a problem in either of the differentials. Joints aren't terrible
to repair but a differential is a lot of work and depending on what you are paying, it could be a deal breaker.

Why would the vaccuum lines for the 4 wheel drive be disconnected and taped off?

Probably becuse when selling the vehicle 4-wheel drive had a problem and the vacuum is what switches into 4-wheel mode. The lights would come on indicating 4x4 on.and without lifting vehicle off the ground you couldnt tell. An old trick of the trade. ?

I have a 1987 jeep wrangler and it will not shift into 4 wheel dr

The front axle connects 4wd by vacuum. check the vacuum hoses that run to the actuator. Pay close attention to the vacuum hoses running underneath the battery as battery acid can eat thru those hose easily. Good Luck.

Oil and filter every 7500 miles unless you do heavy work or towing, then its at 5000 miles.usually 10w-30w Or 5w- if extremely cold.Try a test light in the horn wiring.Pull the wire off, earth it using the test light and push the horn to see if you have power there.Work from the horn back to the steering wheel.Hope this helps

4 wheel drive doesnt work.

Has this Jeep been modified at all?
It sounds like the shifter cable was reinstalled backwards.
Specifically the 4-Low "Not Climbing Well". 4-Low should give you the best torque and hill climbing ability.
Do you feel any "Binding" in the steering wheel (difficult to turn)?
Remember a Jeep uses real driveshafts and differentials to give you 4WD - you cannot engage 4WD or 4-Low on dry hard surfaces. It needs a little bit of slip between the wheels for turns.
Check you're fluids too.
