In this engine use either 5W-30W or 10W-30W, use any name brand oil.

All answers above are WRONG! Use full synthetic 5w-40 or 0W-40 ONLY!

10 w 30 weight and 4-5 quarts

  • David Sparling Feb 19, 2014

Why are you people giving these folks BAD information. It says right on the oil filler cap and in the owner's manual to use 5W-40 weight oil. You will have a very difficult time finding any mineral based 5W-40. IMO 0W-40 Mobil1 synthetic is an even better choice because it flows better at startup. Any reputable VW mechanic will tell you to use ONLY synthetic oil in this turbocharged engine.

I know this thread is old but how in the hell do all these people keep giving the WRONG answers! Thank you David Sparkling for staying on top of ot with the correct response. I have a 2006 passat with 212,000 miles on it and the engine runs great on synthetic 5w40 every 10k miles or so.

2006 passat 2.0t just replaced the Sparks and oil leak in2 places were done by vw dealer and dropped a pan changed the oil 2weeks ago now Im losin oil and every other day a cloud of white smoke with smell...

Valve seals. When you shut the car off overnight, the oil leaks past the seals into the cylinders. When you start it, it burns that oil and smokes for a minute( actually it smoke all the time, just not as bad at startup).

Volkswagen passat wagon 2004 codes p0300 p0302 p0304 p0011 runs fine

You have random misfire codes as well as misfires detected on cylinders #2 and #4. P0011 is likely the root cause of the misfire being detected
P0011 VOLKSWAGEN - 'A' Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced Or System Performance problems.

Possible causes- Dirty engine oil
- Low engine oil level
- Camshaft actuator circuit open or shorted
- Camshaft actuator circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty camshaft actuator

There may be a factory bulletin on this code, check with the VW dealer on that. Possible defective Camshaft actuator.

Passat 2006 2.0 tdi 140 engine won't start dash warning says either "engine fault, garage" or "low oil pressure".

Exhaust pressure sensor a possibility if it has a DPF (diesel particulate filter). Has it had its fuel pump recall, the oil pressure light could be just the constant cranking and running the battery low.

Oil usage

Hi there,

I would suggest using a full synthetic, 5W40. I would use a oil system cleaner, prior to the oil change. let it run in vehicle for 10 - 15 mins or so in the old oil, then i would do the change over, to the synthetic 5w40

Low oil pressure light comes on and goes off

the noise is the chain tensioner in the cylinder head between the two camshafts. it is a job for a proffesional shop. the 1.8t passats had an oiling problem and were fixed with a larger oil filter. some times you have to remove the oilpan and replace the oil pickup tube.
