Hi, it sounds as if the brakes are not releasing on that wheel ,and draging whilst you drive causing it to get hot. easy enough to check ,jack the wheel up and try to turn the wheel ,if it wont turn or a scraping sound is heard ,then that is what the problem is and the wheel needs to come off to find and fix the exact cause.

hi, sorry i have been up to visit my wife in hospital now ----oil on the brake linings can give a burning smell if you get the brakes hot enough, but as i read your post you saidthat tthe driver side rear wheel was locking up ,, if that is the problem ,oil on the shoes is not going to cause lock up ,not by any stretch of the imagination. far more likly to be abrake spring broken, abrake shoe lineing broke and riding up to become jammed over the other side or even abroken anchor pin. the only way you can find out is to take the wheel and brake drum off. even the e brake ,it is all insise that brake drum .please let me know what you find----kerry

GOOD ONE ,NOW ALL YOU HAVE TO DO ,IS FREE IT OR REPLACE IT .I WOULD DIS CONNECT IT ,YOU CAN LIVE WITHOUT PARK BRAKES FOR ACOUPLE OF DAYS ,DRIVE IT AROUND YOU WLL SOON KNOW IF THAT IS WHAT IT IS. GOD LUCK ,AND LET ME KNOW KERRY

My 4x4 button on my dash wont turn on and my 4x4 wont engage . I used it yesterday, usually lights up and 4x4 engages 94 mazda b4000 le 4x4 .

Ford Rangers and Mazda b-series vehicles are the same. I would be willing to bet it is a problem with your shift motor. There is a sensor on the motor that tells the "shift computer" where it is in regards to position. The sensor has a ceramic disk that is glued to a shaft. The glue dries out and the disk doesn't spin with the shaft, so the computer doesn't know the position. You can disassemble the shift motor and re-glue, or just replace the entire shift motor assembly. It's $85 - $100 for a remanufactured unit from Napa (or similar). I just did this for my '94 Ranger, tore it apart and fixed it.

Before doing any of that I would check the 4x4 fuse in the box under the hood. The other fuse to check is inside the cab. It is on the same circuit as the warning lights (if your dash warning lights work, that fuse is fine).

Here's a guide for troubleshooting other transfer case issues.

The calipers are overloading and not fully releasing the rotors. Have you changed the proportioning valve in the brake system? You may want to start there.

Almost sounds like the 4WD actuator is going out in the transfer case. Its a part found at most automotive stores.
