It may be that the gearbox parking pawl is jammed due to high loading on it in park - especially if you stopped on a gradient. try pushing the car uphill slightly to ease the load while somebody else tries to disengage from park. Other cause is a small plastic part in the selector that sometimes breaks.
when parking on a hill, hold foot brake - use park brake - then engage park.
Hope this helps.

The brake switch may be bad on the pedal. Brake lights may still work but signal to trans is lost somewhere. First make sure all fuses are ok. Then test the switch. Voltage should be present on one wire then with the pedal depressed the other wires should have voltage.

2003 jaguar xj8 stuck in park intermittently headlights won't work either

Dont think they will be related but when you press the brake pedal with the ignition on can you here a solenoid click under the gear shift? These are common to fail and often don't release the shifter.

Stype stuck in park

Check the brake lights to see if they are working. The transmission shifter gets an electric signal from the brake light switch telling it the brakes are on and it's OK to shift. If the lights are not working check the fuse. If the fuse is fine then check the brake light switch. It's usually located somewhere around the brake pedal.

in that transmission shifter assembly, there should be a solenoid that is responsible for once the shifter is in park it releases the lock in the steering column. either its not hooked up or not adjusted properly.
