The reverse plates in the transmission are burned up. There's a coating on the plates that cause them to catch on each other and the gears to function correctly. In your case for some reason the coating has come off and the plates are slipping causing the squeal.
this sounds like you have a bad neutral switch, which is where the back up control is located. it sounds like it has a short to power that's why the reverse lights stay on.
you need a new reverse gear. the rest of your transmission should be fine but it will need to be rebuilt because you probably have pieces of the reverse gear floating around in it. it will eventually ruin the transmission if you don't fix it soon.
If it is an automatic transmission, first check the fluid level. If it is low, fill it up and try it again. If the level is fine, then there is a bigger issue and you should seek a professional's help.
chances are your transmission has to be replaced, but first make sure that there is nothing hitting your fan belts sometimes when your engine mounts are bad the engine moves beyond its place and hits things close to the belts. hope this helps you.
I am sorry to have to tell you this but it sounds to me like your transmission is shot and will need a rebuild. If you can get it to a transmission shop they will tell you 100% what wrong with it. .
