I had this problem and thought the fuel filter oil filter needed replacing so i have just had a service done but problem is still there but not as bad. been told it could be the AGR valve or a split pipe going to it which recuirculates unused fuel back to burn again. therefore unspent fuel is coming out of the exhaust causing the black smoke. i am still looking for the answer aswell, hope this helps.

X-type 2004 2 litre diesel estate 84K miles - fine until last six months when black smoke appeared on accelerating - jaguar garage replaced air and fuel filter (£156!) even though air filter was only six months old - blamed volcanic ash and then bad diesel fuel !Did not solve problem and taken back in today and now suggest that the Exhaust Gas Recirculating Valve should be replaced at a discounted cost of (£196!) they admit that first attempt did not work but that it is a matter of elimination. Any advice anyone?

same car, same year, same problem.. i looked at the jaguar forum site and found that this is a common problem, advice was to remove the egr valve and clean it, along with the inlet ports. i removed the egr valce and cleaned it today (it was thick with soot) but did not get time to clean the inlet ports. problem still there. a lot of folk have fitted blanking plates to bypass it and are reporting no problems. a few have removed the vacum pipe so the valve stays shut, again with no reported problems. im cleaning ports tomoz and ill let you know how it goes after.

Hi

I think you willfind that there are flaps inside the inlet manifold that work off a motor these sometimes become detached from the linkage. this will give you lack of power and black smoking.

2006 KJ Cherokee 2.8lt turbo diesel manual. When I accelerate engine surges then flat spot then surges again as it accelerates there is also a lot of black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe

There is a waste gate on a turbo and that gate dumps the excess pressure in the manifold. There is a sensor that determines when the gate opens and closes. You need to run a diagnostic scan and see what the waste gate and sensors are doing.

Black smoke from exhaust but computor saying 44.5 mpg around town. 2.0ltr. mondeo deisel

Your duplicate question did not say it was a diesel.
Usually black smoke on a diesel is dirty injectors or the engine temp not reaching normal range.

Black smoke from nearside exhaust, on occasions.

Black smoke indicates it is feeding too much fuel. Maybe problems with the fuel pump.

Smoke coming from exhaust at higher speeds or when putting foot down, also acceleration jerky like am blipping the accelerator not cruising used to cruise 110 no bother now its taking it to reach 100

If the smoke is blue, it is burning oil. If it is black or dark grey it is running way too rich, like your choke is stuck on. That would also explaing the jerky acceleration and poor response. Your fuel consumption will also skyrocket.
