What happens if I put steering fluid in brake fluid container?

That's a problem. Power steering is a heavy slick fluid, very similar to transmission fluid (my daughter's BMW actually takes ATF fluid in the power steering reservoir). Brake fluid is very thin, solvent-like fluid. I advise getting the system drained, flushed and refilled ASAP.

Black power steering fluid

Power steering fluid has not been changed in eons, i suggest draining the fluid, refilling with a cheap fresh fluid, then bleed the system by turning the wheels from lock to lock a few times with the cap of the steering fluid master cylinder off, then drain the system again & refill with good quality power steering fluid - it should be pink & smell sweet, - the power steering fluid that is!!

Noise when terning and while just going straight plus losing fluid

You've got a power steering fluid leak. The noise is the power steering pump low on fluid. I would put some Lucas Power Steering treatment in the system and refill the fluid. It won't fix the leak forever, but it will recondition the seals and rubber and buy you a lot of time.

I need to top up the power stering fluid and need to know what tipe to use 1988 chevy silverado C3500 454 The power steering looks like it is incorperated into the brake booster

power steering is at the front of the engine and runs on the belt. The reservoir cap looks like this:
73b4b95.jpg To top off steering fluid, use standard steering fluid.

The reservoir in front of the brake booster is the brake master cylinder reservoir. To refill, use standard brake fluid. If it the truck is using brake fluid, check for leaks at the back of the master cylinder and at all wheels.

POWER STEERING AND HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION

You need to check the the power steering resevior located under the hood, the fluid level may be low, and a possible leak, if low you will need to add some power steering fluid, the fuel consumption maybe in need of a tune-up oil change, spark, plugs, fuel filter, air filter.

I don't know what power steering fluid to put in my jetta 2001 td

It is quite possible that the resevor is out of fluid. If this is so, it is very bad for your power steering pump. If it still makes noise after you refill the steering fluid, then you will have to rebuild or replace the power steering pump.

The steering makes a screechy noise when steering.

If fluid was refilled, how is the level now? If it's low again, it may be the problem. If it has a leak somewhere, fluid could possibly leak on the belts that drive the power steering system, causing the squeal or screech. So check the fluid level again, if it's down, top it off, and have the leak fixed. Let me know what you find, and if u need more help. Curt

Power steering audi a6 1999

First, I'd try refilling the fluid. You can't use fluid off the shelf - Audi uses proprietary power steering fluid, available at dealerships (probably a VW dealer can give you the same thing) or online at www.germanautoparts.com or www.ecstuning.com. Try refilling it. The power steering fluid is cooled by a cooler behind the lower part of the bumper, and the fluid itself cools the power steering pump. If you're low on fluid, the pump may be heating up and in turn, heating the fluid. Fill it to the proper level and keep an eye on it for a couple of days and see if that fixes the problem.
