    is there a spring for the clutch pedal? check it out. maybe unhooked. other wise it will need bleeded off.

It sounds like the throw out bearing separated. You will want to change the clutch and pressure plate when you replace the throw out bearing.

  1. Remove the transmission or transaxle as outlined.
  2. Insert a pilot shaft or an old input shaft into the center of the clutch disc, pressure plate, and the pilot bearing in the crankshaft.
  3. With the pilot tool supporting the clutch disc, loosen the pressure plate bolts gradually and in a crisscross pattern.
  4. Remove the pressure plate and clutch disc.
  5. Clean the transmission and clutch housing. Clean the flywheel surface with a non-oil based solvent. Wash your hands before installing or handling the clutch assembly parts. Hold the clutch disc by the center hub only.

Before assembly, slide the clutch disc up and down on the transmission input shaft to check for any binding. Remove any rough spots with crocus cloth and then lightly coat the shaft with Lubriplate.
  1. To remove the throwout bearing assembly: Remove the return clip and take out the throwout bearing carrier and the bearing.
  2. To replace the throwout arm use a / 16 in. punch, knock out the throwout shaft spring pin and remove the shaft, springs, and the center lever.
  3. Do not immerse the throwout bearing in solvent; it is permanently lubricated. Blow and wipe it clean. Check the bearing for wear, deterioration, or burning. Replace the bearing if there is any question about its condition.
  4. Check the shafts, lever, and springs for wear and defects. Replace them if necessary.
  5. If you hadn't planned on replacing the clutch disc, examine it for the following before reusing it. Loose rivets. Burned facing. Oil or grease on the facing. Less than 0.3mm left between the rivet head and the top of the facing.
  6. Check the pressure plate and replace it if any of the following conditions exist: Scored or excessively worn. Bent or distorted diaphragm spring. Loose rivets.
  7. Insert the control lever into the clutch housing. Install the two return springs and the throwout shaft.
  8. Lock the shift lever to the shaft with the spring pin.
  9. Fill the shaft oil seal with multipurpose grease.
  10. Install the throwout bearing carrier and the bearing. Install the return clip.
  11. Grease the carrier groove and inner surface.
  12. Lightly grease the clutch disc splines.

The clutch is installed with the larger boss facing the transmission.
  1. Support the clutch disc and pressure plate with the pilot tool.
  2. Turn the pressure plate so that its balance mark aligns with the notch in the flywheel.
  3. Install the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts head-tight. Using a torque wrench and, working in a crisscross pattern, tighten the bolts to 11-15 ft. lbs.
  4. Install the transmission or transaxle as outlined.
  5. Adjust the clutch as described in the following information.

I replaced the clutch in a 1996 pontiac grand am gt now the clutch petal goes allthe way to the floor and wont retract itself

Find out if this is a hydraulic clutch. Being a 2005, it most likely is and sounds like your slave cylinder went out. I'm not sure where this is on your car, however it is usually mounted on the driver side firewall below the brake mastercylinder (brake fluid resevoir).
If it is not located here (call an auto parts dealer for location, and a repair manual) then you may have an internal slave cylinder which is located in the transmission with the throwout bearing. You will need to pull the passenger side drive axle, seperate the transmission from the engine (if front wheel drive) to replace.
Inquire with your local auto parts dealer or dealership for further details and repair options, and if this is actually the issue. If it's internal, look for a puddle directly below the engine. If the slave cylinder went out, then you'll have a puddle under the engine.
Also, if the slave cylinder (if hydraulic) is mounted to the firewall, either it is bad and needs replaced; needs to be bled (like brakes) or you may not have put the throwout bearing on correctly and it came loose.
Again, inquire with the dealership or an auto parts dealer for details (or a certified mechanic for repairs).

Clutch petal goes to the floor with little resistance. can't get in gear.

fill the reservoir for the clutch slave cylinder. No with the engine OFF pump the clutch 25 times. Yes 25 times. Now start the engine and see if it shifts. If it does you need a new slave cylinder, clutch, pressure plate, & throwout bearing as well. Everything is replaced upon dismantling for you do now want to do it again within a few months later. Also have the flywheel machined smooth if its still any good

I have a 2002 ford mustang gt.. Replaced the clutch bout 3 months ago.. New flywheel throwout bearing.. The whole works. Even purchased a clutch adjuster kit with firewall adjuster.. Car rides good and...

The cutch pedal should have about an inch of free play before contacting the pressure plate. otherwise throw out bearing will run continuously . It wont last long. Adjust at firewall for 1 inch of free play at the top of pedal stroke.

Lets start with what was replaced : Clutch pressure plate, throwout bearing,pilot bearing,input shaft bearing, was flywheel cut or replaced,Clutch cable or slave cylinder (whatever is applicable,) Lets see what repair shop says. Depending on what they say they did or didn't do we will take it from there.

Clutch won't release on 92 Nissan P/U. Changed Clutch Master Cylinder and slave. Bled system. Have good travel on slave cylinder but still does not release the clutch when the pedal is pushed?

If the vehicle has been standing for some time (6 months or more) without use, the clutch plate facings may be 'stuck' to the flywheel and pressure plate surface.
To check/clear this problem:-
(with the engine not running!)
hold clutch pedal down - then from under vehicle, find an opening in the clutch bellhousing (such as a water drain slot) where you can see/access the edge of the clutch plate (sandwiched between the pressure plate and flywheel).
Use a screwdriver blade (or similar tool) to prise clutch plate free from flywheel face (only small movement is required).
If the above is not the cause of your problem, 1) the clutch throwout mechanism should be examined for problems,
2) the pressure plate is faulty- may need to be replaced.

No the procedure is the same as changing the clutch, the only thing is that the clutch stays on the flywheel and the to bearing will be changed.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If equipped with a cable clutch (1982-84 vehicles), disconnect the cable at the clutch release lever and transaxle, as outlined earlier in this section.
  3. For 1985-94 vehicles remove the sound insulator from inside the vehicle. Disconnect the clutch master cylinder pushrod from the clutch pedal.

  1. Remove the transaxle, as outlined earlier in this section.
  2. Mark the pressure plate assembly and the flywheel so that they can be assembled in the same position. They were balanced as an assembly at the factory.
  3. Loosen the attaching bolts one turn at a time until spring tension is relieved.
  4. Support the pressure plate and remove the bolts. Remove the pressure plate and clutch disc. Do not disassemble the pressure plate assembly; replace it if defective.
  5. Inspect the flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing and the clutch fork and pivot shaft assembly for wear. Replace the parts as required. If the flywheel shows any signs of overheating, or if it is badly grooved or scored, it should be refaced or replaced.

To install:
  1. Clean the pressure plate and flywheel mating surfaces thoroughly.
  2. Position the clutch disc and pressure plate into the installed position, and support with a dummy shaft or clutch aligning tool, tool J 29074 or equivalent. The clutch plate is assembled with the damper springs offset toward the transaxle. One side of the factory supplied clutch disc is stamped "Flywheel Side".
  3. Install the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts. Tighten them in the sequence shown in the accompanying figure, as follows:
    1. Tighten bolts 1,2,3, then 4,5,6 in the sequence shown to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
    2. Tighten bolts 1,2,3, then 4,5,6 in the sequence shown to 15-22 ft. lbs. (22-30 Nm) plus an additional 30° turn.
    3. Remove the clutch alignment tool.

  4. Lubricate the outside groove and the inside recess of the release bearing with high temperature grease. Wipe off any excess. Install the release bearing.
  5. Install the transaxle, as outlined earlier in this section.



WARNING When adjusting the cruise control switch, do NOT exert an upward force on the clutch pedal pad of more than 20 lbs. (89 N) or damage to the master cylinder pushrod retaining ring may result.

  1. For 1985-94 vehicles, attach the clutch master cylinder pushrod to the clutch pedal and secure with the retaining clip. If equipped with cruise control, check the switch adjustment at the clutch pedal bracket. Install the sound insulator.
  2. If equipped with a cable clutch, attach the clutch cable at the transaxle and clutch release lever. Check the clutch operation by lifting the clutch pedal up to allow the mechanism to adjust the cable length. Depress the pedal slowly a few times to set the pawl into mesh with the quandrant teeth.


ADJUSTMENTS


All 1982-84 models have a self-adjusting clutch mechanism located on the clutch pedal, eliminating the need for periodic free play adjustments. The self-adjusting mechanism should be inspected periodically as follows:
  1. Depress the clutch pedal and look for the pawl on the self-adjusting mechanism to firmly engage the teeth on the ratchet.
  2. Release the clutch. The pawl should be lifted off of the teeth by the metal stop on the bracket.

On 1985 and later models, the hydraulic clutch system provides automatic clutch adjustment. No adjustment of clutch linkage or pedal position is required.
