Are lifters a common problem on chevy malibu 3100

My 99 chevy malbu has a small missfire and a lifter tick. Are lifters a common problem on for the V6 3100?

Paul, I will say that i do try to not change the oil every 3000 becuse some say it is over maintaining.
The car has 90000 mi and i just got done replacing lower intake gasket and it ran fine for about three months now on the way to work it just started to misfire and tick with no problems before.
You say to set the valves but there is no setting to them it is torque to 19ftlb and 30 degree. could you explain. I took off the valve covers and expected to make sure they didn't come lose but nothing they all are tight and there seem to be alittle play in two rockers i will turn engine over see if those two are still lose or if others come lose. any other help would be great i am thinking about runing trans fluid through it to maybe clean it out do you agree?

That depends on when was the last time the car was serviced and how many miles its done since the last service.

If its a high milage car then having the valves set should clear up the misfire and the lifter tick.

did you read the TSBs on chain noise of lifter noise.
how many miles on engine? 100k, 500K?
not changing oil frequently dooms most HLA lifters. they gum up and click (collapse)
same with chain
same with the tensioner,
a good tech, can find which part ticks with a $5 stethoscope.

2000 bmw 540i lifters making ticking noise

Yes not a problem to fix. Tighten the lifter or lifters just until they quit ticking then lock the set screw and your good

Engine tick

Depends on model, yr etc. Early models had solid lifters that needed routine adjustment. Later models, eng tick generally is oil related - sticking hydraulic lifter(s). Sometimes a small exhaust leak can give same symptom and in some models that have plastic intake runners this is common, I would have BMW dealer or specialty shop look at it and give you assessment.

My 99 chevy malibu Clean out lifters

add a litre of diesel and a 3 sec squirt of fairy washing up liquid ,use vehicle for a week and see how it sounds ,if its quietened down a bit ,change the oil and use a cheap diesel engine oil and then add some more diesel and fairy and leave another week ,if it still hasnt quiented down then strip and repair ,is has quietened down the change oil again for good measure and use the diesel engine oil as its a detergent oil and then change oil at approx 6000mile interval no longer and use the cheap oil .Change oil filter every third oil change and you will not get a repeat of the problem.Use an expensive long life oil and the problem will re appear ,because the additives and combustion residues will clog up and stick the hydraulic valve lifters

Lifter ticking when I start my 1999 Chevy Tahoe

Your lifters have become clogged over the years. Its only after the oil warms up and thins out does it allow oil to "pump up" the lifters. That's why it goes quiet after 5 min. There are several different brands of additives on the market that can fix this problem ,unless you have a more serious mechanical problem, which I doubt.Check your local auto parts store for the additive. Just add it to your oil and "wham!" problem solved. Good Luck!

My friend just got a 1988 ford ranger  v6 2.9L and has a valve tap and was wondering what different kind of ways he could fix this

if its an ohv type the most common fault is that the oil ways to the rocker shafts become blocked
so get some flushing oil drain the oil and replace with the flushing oil and run for the time stayed on the can then Change to good quality oil and new filter
then remove the rocker covers and check and adjust the valve clearances
if its an ohc type its all hydraulic adjustment
you could try flushing as above but apart from that the only other way is to change the lifters and followers
hope this helps
