There are no handbrake shoes on the rear. There's one set that operates when you apply the brake pedal and when you apply the handbrake. One set of shoes to handle two functions.

There are adjustments on each handbrake shoe set inside the rear disc hub. These are done by removing the disc/calliper and callier bracket and measuring the diameter of the handbrake brake surface hub and the outer surface of the shoe, less a small gap (i can't recall what it is)
Then there is a cable adjustment under the car about near the centre muffler where the right and left cables meet up. There is a 6mm nut (10mm head) that can be adjusted to reduce lever travel. This is on the FG and not like the BA/BF and AU's where the adjustment was on the lever.
I would not recommend doing any of this unless you are a mechanic or extremely familiar with vehicle mechanical design as getting it wrong can be dangerous and costly.
the rear shoes are auto adjust so if the handbrake cable has not been over adjusted and is not siezed then it should work ok what i would do is to slacken off the handbrake cable. make sure the shoes are good and the auto adjusters are free then drive it for a run and keep using the foot brake then readjust the handbrake cable
Callipers are what hold the pads and the cylinders on the car. They have nothing to do with your problem. However they are attached by 2 bolts that are fixed to the axle housing mount. These bolts will rust up and not allow the callipers to move and centralize on the disc rotor. If you look at the callipers you will see 2 bolts that have what looks like a rubber seal under the head These are the bolts . Although you have adjusted the hand brake, if you have shoes inside the hub of the disc rotor they will have to be adjusted first and not just the lever.
The disc is not held on with the axle hub nut, you need to remove the brake calipar & carrier , then the 6mm Allen screw from the disc, the disc may be seized on the hub or sticking on the handbrake shoes you may have to hot the disc centre with a hammer to loosen it
no sweat just undo the big nut in the middle ,then when off wash out with a hose DO NOT BLOW WITH AIRLINE OR BRUSH then rub the lip down that forms on the end of the drum ,now i always use a nagle grinder here with one of them flexable type rubbing disks things and i dont know the correwct name for them ,then with no lip i then manually adjust the rear brakes on the auto adjuster ,make sure that before you do this that the handbrake arms are right the way back if out a bit then slacken off the cable ,after refitting and adjustment of the shoes if more than 3 clicks on the handbrake adjust the cabl ,what happens is that in the dealers where they employ young inexperianced young lads who are on bonus they just adjust the cable and charge the job sheet for a complete drum off job .When done properly the brake foot pedal will be hard with no excessive travel and the handbrake can be locked up`at 30mph ,its a ford remember and they always have good back brakes unlike these silly rear disks with the handbrake on the caliper .just like the old MKI 4 zodiac ,no handbrake turns on that car but a cortina ,now that was a right drifter or a really hairy drifter - a 3litre capri MK I.Sorry for nostalga showing my age here
Problem will be with the rear brake shoes. Very likely one of 2 handbrake cables corroded and snapped.
Access to handbrake is under the plastic centre console - then under flap in carpet. Should be a ballance bar that should be equal 90 degrees. If it's not - replace both handbrake cables. DIY job -but you need a 2ft breaker bar for the Hub nuts.
The handbrake bellcrank on the back of the backing plate just needs to be adjusted.
You should only have 9 - 12 clicks on the hand brake lever when you pull it up. If you got alot more then you need to adjust it.
There currently is no aftermarket options for this sort of design, you can get better aftermarket brake shoes but thats not going to improve your handbrake.
If you still have problems after adjusting then you may need to get your rear brake hub face machined so that the brake shoe can have more surface area to grip onto.
On the inboard side of the rear wheel hubs, you will find an oval rubber plug, pry this plug out, to gain access to the brake adjuster. Pull the handbrake up two clicks. Jack and support. Remove the rear wheel, and adjust the brake using a screw driver levered through the slot to turn the notched wheel of the adjuster, until the hub starts to drag when rotated by hand. Repeat for the other side. Note the ratchet mechanism on the adjuster will only let it turn one way.
you can try go under the car and use two spanners size 13mm to adjust the tension on the cable if its not too loose you will get away with it. if not you gotta take the rear wheels off and the rear hubs and adjust the brake shoes inside the hubs.
The handbrake shoes are in the drum. They use a dual rear brake system. The discs are operated by the pedal and the handbrake operates the shoes in the drum.
What do you mean "under" the hub?
Adjusting the emerg brake is difficult. You have to adjust the brakes in the drum first, then the cable.
