I'm trying to remove the coil spring on a 1981 AMC concord. Is the retaining bolts on the lower spring spindle permanate or do they come out? I collapsed the coil but can't slide the lower spring seat out because I can't get the studs out. Help!

They are supposed to come out. You may have to use a grinder and cut the heads off to get it out. They are probably rusted in. If you can't get at the head of the bolts. cut them flush from the bottom and use a hammer and punch to drive them loose. The can be replaced with regular bolts of the same size. When you get the new bolts pick up a small round (chainsaw) file to help clean out the holes before you put the bolts back in. Hope this helps.

I'm trying to remove the coil spring on a 1981 AMC - 1306f60.gif
This is for the lower control arm:
NOTE The inner end of the lower control arm is attached to a removable crossmember. The outer end is attached to the steering knuckle pin and ball joint assembly.

  1. Jack up the car and support it on axle stands under the subframes.
  2. Remove the brake drum or caliper and rotor from the spindle.
  3. Disconnect the steering arm from the knuckle pin.
  4. Remove the lower ball joint stud cotter pin and nut.
  5. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle pin using a ball joint removal tool.
  6. Disconnect the sway bar from the control arm.
  7. Unbolt the strut rod.
  8. Remove the inner pivot bolt and the control arm. To install:
  9. Reverse the removal procedure; do not tighten inner pivot bolt until car weight is on wheels. Tighten ball joint retaining nut to 40 ft. lbs. through 1976, 75 ft. lbs. thereafter, strut rod bolts to 75 ft. lbs., sway bar bolts to 8 ft. lbs., steering arm bolts to 65 ft. lbs. through 1979, 55 ft. lbs. thereafter, and control arm inner pivot bolt to 95 ft. lbs. through 1976, 110 ft. lbs. thereafter.
This is for the coil spring.....see if maybe you missed a step in here:


  1. Remove the shock absorber.
  2. Install a spring compressor through the upper spring seat opening and bolt it to the lower spring seat using the lower shock absorber mounting holes.
  3. Remove the lower spring seat pivot retaining nuts, then tighten the compressor tool to compress the spring about 1" (25.4mm).
  4. Jack up the front of the car and support it on axle stands at the subframe (allowing the control arms to hang free).
  5. Remove the front wheel and pull the lower spring seat out away from the car, then slowly release the spring tension and remove the coil spring and lower spring seat. To install:
  6. Place the spring compressor through the coil spring and tape the rubber spring cushion to the small diameter end of the spring (upper).
  7. Place the lower spring seat against the spring with the end of the coil against the formed shoulder in the seat. The shoulder and coil end face inwards, toward the engine, when the spring is installed.
  8. Place the spring up against the upper seat, then align the lower spring seat pivot so that the retaining studs will enter the holes in the upper control arm.
  9. Compress the coil spring and install the spring.
  10. Then install the wheel and tire and lower the car to the floor (to place weight on suspension).
  11. Install and tighten lower spring seat spindle retaining nuts and tighten them to 35 ft. lbs.
  12. Remove the spring compressor and install the shock absorber.

NEED DIAGRAM FOR LOCATIONS OF CRANKSHAFT PULLY,OIL SLINGER AND SPRING.FOR 1983 MAZDA 2.2L DIESEL

Here is the procedure:-


  1. Remove setscrew from side of cylinder block.


  2. Remove oil pipe attaching bolts.


  3. Remove oil pump and strainer.
TIMING GEAR COVER



  1. Remove timing gear cover to case attaching bolts.


  2. Remove timing gear cover and gasket.

CAMSHAFT, CRANKSHAFT, IDLER & INJECTION PUMP GEARS



  1. Remove oil slinger and washers from crankshaft snout.
Using puller set 49 0839 425C or equivalent, remove crankshaft timing gear, Fig. 3.


  1. Position a clean rag between camshaft and idler gears, then remove cam gear lock bolt and washers.


  2. Using puller set 49 0839 425C or equivalent, remove cam gear from camshaft, Fig. 3.


  3. Remove idler gear to spindle retaining nuts and washers, then remove idler gear and spindle assemblies.


  4. Remove injection pump drive gear.


  5. Remove timing gear case to cylinder block attaching bolts, then the timing case.



CAMSHAFT




  1. Remove tappets from cylinder block.


  2. Remove camshaft thrust plate to cylinder block retaining bolts and washers, then pull camshaft from block.



PISTON & CONNECTING ROD




  1. Remove connecting rod bearing cap retaining nuts and bolts, then separate bearing cap from connecting rod.


  2. Using the wooden handle end of a hammer, push the piston and connecting rod assembly outward until piston rings clear cylinder bore. Remove piston and connecting rod assembly through top of cylinder block.


  3. To separate piston from connecting rod, remove piston pin retaining clips, then press pin from piston using a suitable driver.



CRANKSHAFT




  1. Remove rear oil seal cap retaining bolts, then the cap and seal.


  2. Remove main bearing cap to cylinder block retaining bolts, then the main bearing caps and thrust washers.


  3. Lift crankshaft from cylinder block.

If the following is not enough then maybe try Alldata.com which generally has more information, but it will cost: REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Chrysler Concorde, New Yorker, LHS Dodge Intrepid Eagle Vision
  1. Remove the rear wheels and brake drums.
  2. Remove the dust cap from the rear hub and bearing assembly.
  3. Remove the cotter pin, nut retainer and wave washer. Discard the old cotter pin.
  4. Remove the rear hub and bearing assembly retainer nut and washer. Remove the rear hub and bearing assembly from the spindle.
  5. Remove the automatic adjuster spring from the adjuster lever.
  6. Rotate the automatic adjuster starwheel enough so both shoes move out far enough to be free of the wheel cylinder boots.
  7. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the actuating lever. Disconnect parking brake cable one side at a time.
  8. Remove the both lower brake shoe to anchor springs.
  9. Remove the 2 brake shoe hold-down springs from the brake shoes.
  10. Remove the brake shoes, upper shoe-to-shoe return spring, automatic adjuster and automatic adjuster lever from the backing plate as an assembly.
  11. Separate the brake shoes from the automatic adjuster mechanism.
  12. Remove the brake shoe automatic adjuster lever from the leading brake shoe. To install:
  13. Thoroughly clean and dry the backing plate. To prepare the backing plate, lubricate the bosses, anchor pin and parking brake actuating lever pivot surface lightly with lithium based grease.
  14. Remove, clean and dry all parts still on the old shoes. Lubricate the starwheel shaft threads with anti-seize lubricant.
  15. Assemble both brake shoes, the top shoe to shoe return spring, automatic adjuster and automatic adjuster lever before mounting on vehicle. Make sure the ends of the automatic adjusters are positioned above the extruded pins in the webbing of the brake shoes prior to installation.
  16. Install the brake shoe assembly onto the brake support plate and install the hold-down springs.
  17. Install the lower anchor springs and reconnect the parking brake cable to the park brake lever of the trailing brake shoe.
  18. Rotate the serrated adjuster nut to remove the free-play from the adjuster assembly.
  19. Install the automatic adjuster lever spring on the lead brake shoe assembly and the automatic adjuster lever.
  20. Install the rear hub and bearing assembly. Install washer and retainer nut and torque to 124 ft. lbs. (168 Nm).
  21. Install the wave washer, nut retainer and a new cotter pin onto the spindle. Install dust cap.
  22. Adjust brake shoes so not to interfere with brake drum installation. Install the rear brake drum. NOTE: After installing the brake drums, pump the brake pedal several times to partially adjust the brake shoes. To verify proper operation of the self-adjusting parking brake, be sure that both rear brakes are not dragging when the parking brake pedal is released.
  23. Install the rear wheels and lug nuts. Torque the lug nuts, in a star pattern sequence, to 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm).
  24. Road test the vehicle. The automatic adjusters will continue brake adjustment during the road test of the vehicle.

Removal & Installation Independent Front Suspension – 2WD Vehicles To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Safely raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Support the lower control arm outboard end.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Upper shock absorber nut, retainer and grommet
    • Lower nuts and shock absorber
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Lower retainer and grommet on the shock absorber stud and insert shock absorber through frame bracket hole
    • Lower nuts
      1. Torque to: 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm)
    • Upper grommet, retainer and new nut (or existing nut with Mopar Lock N Seal or Loctiti 242) on the shock absorber stud

    • Upper part of shock absorber into frame bracket with insulators and retainers and nut
      1. Torque to: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
    • Lower part of shock absorber into lower control arm with the bolt
      1. Torque to: 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm)
  2. Remove support from lower control arm.
  3. Install tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Lower the vehicle.
Link/Coil Front Suspension To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Nut, retainer, and grommet from upper stud in engine compartment dod_ram15_02-04_shock.gif

    • Nuts from upper shock bracket
  3. Lower bolt from axle bracket and shock absorber from engine compartment
To Install:
  1. Position lower retainer and grommet on upper stud and insert the shock through the spring from the engine compartment.
  2. Install or connect the following:

      1. Torque to: 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm)
    • Upper shock bracket and nuts
      1. Torque to: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
    • Upper grommet, retainer and upper shock absorber nut

The rear wheel bearings are not adjustable. If the bearings make noise or become loose, they must be replaced.

Removal & Installation

With Drum Brakes

NOTE The wheel bearings are contained within the wheel hub and must be replaced as an assembly.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  4. Remove the anti-lock sensor retaining bolt and remove the sensor.
  5. Remove the brake drum retainer and the brake drum.
  6. Remove the hub retaining nut dust cover.
    NOTE Do not use an impact gun to remove the hub retainer nut.

  8. Slide the hub and bearing assembly off of the spindle.

To install:
  1. Reinstall the hub and bearing assembly to the spindle.
  2. Reinstall the hub retainer nut. Tighten the retainer nut to 170-192 ft. lbs. (230-260 Nm).
    WARNING Do not use an impact gun to tighten the hub retainer nut, otherwise the bearings may be damaged.
  3. Install the hub retaining nut dust cover.
  4. Reinstall the brake drum.
  5. Check the brake shoes for proper adjustment.
  6. Reinstall the anti-lock sensor and the retaining bolt. Tighten the retaining bolt to 7-8 ft. lbs. (9-11 Nm).
  7. Reinstall the wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the wheel nuts to 62 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  8. Lower the vehicle until the wheels are supporting the vehicles weight. This will properly load the suspension.
  9. Tighten the spindle-to-control arm bolt to 52-79 ft. lbs. (70-98 Nm).
  10. Tighten the tie rod-to-spindle bolt to 75-102 ft. lbs. (102-135 Nm).
  11. Finish lowering the vehicle.
Road test the vehicle and check for proper operation.

RAISE AND SAFELY SUPPORT VECHICLE.PLACE A SUPPORT UNDER THE REAR AXLE.REMOVE NUTS AND BOLTS ATTACHING THE SHOCK ABSORBER TO THE RADIUS ARM.REMOVE THE NUT SECURING THE SPRING TO THE AXLE AND REMOVE THE RETAINER.SLOWLY LOWER THE AXLE TO RELIEVE THE SPRING TENSION.REMOVE THE SPRING BY ROTATING THE UPPER COIL OUT OF THE TABS IN THE UPPER SPRING SEAT - TO INSTALL.INSTALL. THE TOP OF THE SPRING IN THE UPPER SEAT.ROTATING INTO POSITION.RAISE THE AXLE UNTIL SPRING IS SEATED IN THE LOWER SPRING SEAT.INSTALL THE LOWER RETAINER AND TIGHTEN THE NUT TO 70 - 100 FT LBS .THEN CONNECT THE SHOCK ABSORBER TO THE RADIUS ARM AND LOWER THE VECHICLE.

Replacing front struts

Okay....here is the steps first....and then the directions on how to use the tools:

  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the front wheel.
  3. Detach the shock absorber lower mount by removing the two bolts.
  4. Remove the retainer nut, retainer, cushion and shock absorber.
  5. Detach the cushion retainer from the shock absorber.
  6. Compress the coil spring with a commercially available spring compressor.
  7. Detach the stabilizer bar.
  8. Support the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle securely.
  9. Remove the cotter pin.
  10. Loosen and remove the nut.
  11. Using a ball joint removal tool, detach the lower ball joint from the lower control arm.
  12. Loosen the suspension arm set bolt.
  13. Remove the suspension arm set bolt nut.
  14. Remove the nut from the strut bar front set bolt.
  15. Pull out both set bolts.
  16. Remove the lower suspension arm and coil spring. To install:
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the following torque specifications:
    1. Strut bar front set bolt: 221 ft. lbs. (300 Nm)
    2. Lower suspension arm set bolt: 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
    3. Lower ball joint nut: 80 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
    4. Lug nuts: 83 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).

Need to replace steering arm on pass side on 1998

Your description leads me to believe that the spindle is bent. This is the piece that the tie rod attaches to near the wheel. Sometimes the tie rod is attached to a piece that attaches to the spindle which is rather intuitive. Just remove the tie rod end, unbolt the arm that attaches to the spindle and replace the arm. In this case the only special tool you'll need is a tie rod seperator.

If the arm is a part of the spindle and cannot be removed easily:

1) Put vehicle in park and safety brake on - chock the rear wheels
2) Lift passenger side front wheel and put on jack stands
3) Remove wheel and have a friend apply brake pressure
4) Loosen hub nut with appropriate socket (22 to 35mm)
You can purchase the socket from your local auto parts store
You'll need a large breaker bar, its torqued to about 100ft-lbs
5) Remove tie rod end with a tie rod/ball joint separator
This can also be purchased at your local auto parts store.
Some spindles are made with tie rod end permanantly attached
If it is removable, remove nut and drive the separator tool
between the tie rod and spindle using a large hammer.
It'll eventually break free from the spindle.
6) Remove the strut with a strut spring compressor tool
WARNING - THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS
This can be purchased at your local auto parts store.
Compress spring before removing lower bolts (2 of them).
The strut may be left on vehicle but the spring must be
compressed.
7) Remove caliper and break assembly
Loosen the two slide bolts that go through the caliper assembly
Remove caliper and breaks - let it hang by the tubing
8) Detach upper and lower ball joints with seperator tool as in #5
9) Finally remove the hub nut from #4
The spindle should slide off the axle
10) Repair or replace the spindle and put it all back together in
reverse order using new wheel bearings. Pack them with axle
grease if theyr'e not the sealed type.

NOTE: The tie rod end may need to be replaced also. The vehicle will need a front end allignment. Be sure to torque the hub nut to the manufacturers specifications - at least 75ft-lbs. You should probably replace the wheel bearings.
