2002 Hyundai Matrix transmission problem. While driving the engine check light comes on and I am unable to kickdown to overtake. Whenever, I try to drive from a complete stop, the car seem to be lazy. I discovered that if I switch off the car then start, then switch off a second time then start, the check light comes off. I am then able to drive and kickdown as usual until the engine check light comes back on. What can cause this problem and how can I fix it?

When the check engine light comes on a fault has occurred and a fault code or codes is recorded in the Powertrain control modules memory. What you need to do now is have the fault code or codes read and then perform diagnostics based on what the codes are.

SOURCE: Hyundai Matrix Check Engine and ABS lights come on

Your ABS likely has a very dirty reluctor (can happen if the teeth get mud or brake dust in them) or possibly one of your speed sensors is starting to weaken and is close to failure. The proper diagnostic sequence is to have the trouble codes pulled from ABS and Engine modules and determine what the computers SAW when the lights were turned on. Most likely based on description, your ABS will have a speed sensor code, and your engine and/or trans module will have a transmission related trouble code. Very few transmission codes are things you can service at home, usually youll see solenoid or gear slippage codes...mostly those require internal repairs that often require removal of the valve body or rebuild of the transmission.
Make sure you check fluid level, that is the most common cause of transmission slippage codes, however if fluid is full, it indicates that unless the fluid has failed completely, you may need transmission repairs.

Eh! I gotta google too. :) The Ecu computer controls so much on these vehicles these days that the dealers aren't equiped tofix their own makes.. It is possible like the other post sai, that there is some form of bsd connection. I figure the computer controls the information highway and keeps the operator informed on the happenings. If I can suggest looking at the transfer case for any electrical that could be talking to the computer Or possibly a sensor that is poorly connected. Is there a particular time or condition like rough roads/off roading or any thing else you can narrow it down to? If you live local to riverside or Mira loma, I would be more than happy to have you drop over and work together on this. I'm retired and home 24/7 and need something to do. Won't cost, a mechanic at a shop would so just let me know. I have a few ideas we can then discuss. It would take a ck list to cover it on here. My name is Ned @909-630-3192. Nothing to lose. good luck and feel free to call.

One reason for that light to come on is that the gas cap is not on correctly or has become defective.

2002 Auto Hyundai Accent stuck in second gear will not go up

having the transmission rebuilt in 2010 means that the tranny is 7 years old since service so there can be any amount of faults
run the fault codes to check for problem TCM, VSS, servos and solenoids
check the vacuum actuator for the transmission and vacuum lines
change the transmission oil
the engine light also reports on transmission failures

I have a 2002 X-type Jag. My engine light comes on and I had it check. The code is P1796. Can you tell what this mean?

My records show that P1796 Fault indicates a Kick Down Switch Circuit Malfunction, however there appears to be some discrepency here as other records show it as a CAN bus (off) fault. A quick check to see if your car will go into kickdown should identify which is which. Clear the fault then drive gently for 20-30 miles, if no engine light then use the kickdown and see if it comes on. You can check out other fault codes at http://www.bluejag.co.uk.

2002 hyundai accent.transmission works great if you leave it in second gear.if leaving the selector in drive the transmission will start out in second and never shift to overdrive.when coming to a stop in...

Hi

Well two of the tranny codes ; P0734 and PO732 indicate gear 2,3,4 ratio incorrect. This can be caused by poor readings at the input and output speed sensors or pulse generators. The P1709 code is in reference to the kickdown servo switch.

Replacing the pulse generator set and TCM reprogramming( as per TSB) may solve your problem, otherwise you have a major component failure in the transmission unit. I would get some line pressures at the transmission checked first.

Sounds like the transmission is in fail safe mode, this happens when there is a transmission fault, you only have two gears 2nd and reverse.

Hope this helps - Steve

2002 hyundai elantra gls . low idle speed, check engine light on, and doesn't shift out of low gear . ( 50,000 ) miles

Did the 'Check Engine' Light come ON? Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on. You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code which have been stored in the ECU computer. Afterward, we might be able to help you DIAGNOSE and perhaps eventually fix the problem.

Code 1529

Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on. P1529 is a TCM MIL request to the
ECM.
TCM = Transmission Control Module. The sluggishness is really what is known as 'fail safe' mode (3rd gear). You should have had other codes besides P1529 to identify which system in the transmission caused the problem.
