Hello, I have a PT cruiser 1.6L, 70000km. The fuel consumption jumped 50% (from 7L to 11L/100km average),less power/hesitating engine in the 3000-4000rpm range. Changed spark plugs, air filter, oil, checked brake calipers for lag, checked tire pressure=> still the same.
Thanks in advance
Miguel
As an L1 ASE Master technician, this sort of fuel consumption should be setting an engine code or codes. What I believe to be happening is that the fuel trims are being falsely skewed down to which the vehicles response would be increase duty cycle of fuel injectors to attempt to maintain a perfect stochiometric (14.7/1 air fuel) ratio. I need to know if the vehicle has any check engine codes. Have them check even if the malfunction indicator lamp is NOT on. They can be burnt out..
Go to an Autozone or O'rilies and have the codes pulled. Their scanners are archaic and their "counter" people were just working at Mc'Donalds last week, and most of them have no idea about a car and would already be lost at what I have told you, but they CAN plug their handheld scanner into the car and push a button. Let me know what you find.
Cheers!

SOURCE: chrysler pt cruiser fuel filter location?
Under vehicle, center, below seating area, mounted on top of fuel tank, in fuel pump module
SOURCE: 2002 PT Cruiser fuel pump and filter
FUEL PUMP IS LOCATED IN FUEL TANK..FILTER IS LOCATED ON TOP OF PUMP MODULE..A NEW PUMP WILL NORMALLY COME WITH THIS FILTER..YOU MUST REMOVE FUEL TANK FROM VEHICLE TO REPLACE THESE COMPONENTS..IF YOUR NOT SURE YOU CAN DO THIS,I WOULD TALK TO A REPAIR SHOP..FUEL CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS

If no check engine light is on, I would try to replace the coil pack first. Usually on these cars a drop in fuel pressure associated with a bad fuel pump should throw a code.

if you have replace the purge solenoid the problem is either the vaccum supply hose is loosing vaccum or the purge side is hose is either blocked or cracked.
