Car shaking and vibrating at 55 mph. and does it again at 65-70.
Hi, I just recently put new tires on my car, spin blance, alinement and my steering wheel and car is still vibrating, shaking sometimes at 55 mph smoothes out at 60 mph then starts again at about 65 to 70 mph. I have a 2001 BMW 540I with 104,000 miles on it. What could cause this problem? Could it have something to do with a flexdisk or wheel hub or both. I would really appreciate your help. Thank you very much and have a good day.
Re: Car shaking and vibrating at 55 mph. and does it...
1.You could be right, check the flexdisk and the wheelhub, since you have already check wheel balance, wheel alignment, and the steering wheel. 2. Have the following check as well; a) steering linkage assembly for worn out joint parts. b) propeller shaft (cross bearing, center bearing) c) engine mount for defects.
Re: Car shaking and vibrating at 55 mph. and does it...
Hi:
Since your BMW 540 series is a rear wheel drive car, a common cause of that sort of vibration is often the U joints on your drive shaft. The vibration often only shows up and certain speeds.
It isn't a particularly expensive repair, but is something to have checked out!

There are many stages of vibration. The most common is in the steering and USUALLY a steering dampner will correct this. However, your description is not real defined and until the technician actually experiences it, it cannot be properly diagnosed
A vibration such as you are talking about could be caused by more then one thing. First it could be caused by a broken belt in one of your tires. I could also be caused by a bent rim, a warped rotter, or a bad cv joint. I hope this helps you solve your problem.
I have this same car with exactly the same problem. Begins shaking at 40mph and stops shaking as soon as you let off the gas, but then begins again as soon as you press on the gas and smooths out as you get over 50. And the shaking is not felt through the steering wheel. Solution: Replace the transmission mounts. There are two of them, one on each side mounted on the frame right next to the shock strut. There is also a front and rear engine mount, but I replaced the two as described and shaking is gone.
Lift the back of your car. With a stable rest and with the two hind wheels hanging, run your car up to the speed where you experienced vibration. have someone take care of the throttle and shifting while you observe the transmission shaft. You may have an imbalanced shaft.
1-have wheel blancing.
2-check front wheel rim any damage
3-have same front tire
4-check your drive shaft
5-also steering joints
6-check your suspention
i had the alignment done about six months ago at the dealership. Would they have been able to align the car if something was bad? Not sure how they deemed the new tires bad, but they said they moved the tires from left to right and front to back and could control the shimmy and shake. this has went on for about a year. I dont believe the new tires the first time were bad, i believe the rim was bent. I dont know what to do. These tires have about 10000 miles on them, have been balanced twice, a rim was replaced due to them saying it was bent, but yet, the vibration starts at about 55 and gets worse as you gain speed. Can even feel it in the passenger seat in the front as well. Steering wheel shakes. You can actually see your hand shake while you are driving it, but then at times, it seems to go away and start again. Thanks for any suggestions.
