I know my camry has a broken exhaust (where the catalytic converter should be) but now it makes a really loud chugging noise, not all the time. Usually only when it's cold...today it was all the way warmed up but starting making the really loud "chugging" noise going down the freeway...didn't want to go faster than 60 mph. Could this be because of the cracked exhaust?

No not likely but would guess that catalytic converter is plugged, if you don't do something soon you can cause some damage to the engine. also with gas leak the computer does not function right because of the loss of back pressure from the exhaust system. MANY PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND IF THE BACK PRESSURE IS WRONG THE ENGINE WILL NOT RUN right. The car can have a miss that you can't detect and that destroys the cat. So don't be surprised if you need a tune up and a top engine clean to make it run right. And if you live in California and are using gas with MTBE's it makes it even worse. So take it to a shop and they can use two things to test it. One is a infrared heat probe that will tell them if the cat is working or not and if the cat is plugged. the other is a gas analyzer. Also be aware if you have exhaust leaking it can get into the car and you can't smell the CO2 and if you have kids it has been prov-en that the CO2 will hurt children and older people as the CO@ level builds up in the blood and deprives the body of oxygen so
Please be careful with this issue, if the shop does not have a heat gun they can connect a vacuum gage up to see if the cat is plugged that way. hope this helps.

How to repair p0420

This is a code for catalytic converter low efficiency. Usually, this code points to a bad catalytic converter but not always... since the rear (downstream) oxygen sensor could be bad (this is the O2 sensor after the catalytic converter). The oxygen sensors and circuits need to be tested to verify defect is actually the converter and not a sensor or circuit problem

Catalytic converter turns red hot on my 2002 ford escape

The cherry red is probably due to raw gasoline being burned in the converter. Since the engine isn't running right (and I'm surprised you didn't say the Check Engine light was on), there seems to be some kind of valve timing issue or perhaps a burnt valve that is causing at least one cylinder to not fire and thus expel the fuel/air mixture into the exhaust stream. This can be confirmed with a compression check of the cylinders. If they are all low, then there is a problem with valve timing, possible a jumped belt/chain. If only one cylinder is low, then a burnt or broken valve is more likely.

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt, and it has been driving fine until a couple of months ago. One day it just started shaking and my engine light started to flash on and off. I got it checked out and they said it...

It sounds like the catalytic converter might have come loose causing a loud exhaust leak. Did they repair the problem that caused the converter to plug up like a defective oxygen sensor or coil pack?

Hyundai accent 1995 making loud noise and taking too long to pick up speed

You may want to have your catalytic converter inspected to see if the internal components are broken and possibly clogging your exhaust flow.

Ive had my cougar for a couple years now. i rear ended someone and got the whole front end replaced and when i got the car back it sounded and ran perfect...now months later my exhaust sounds ridiculously...

I believe I know exactly what is wrong with the exhaust. The squeak is a common indicator of the problem. When the exhaust pipe is connected, the style of pipe changes from a big cast-iron multicylinder hunk of metal to the long tinny shiny pipe that goes to the exhaust.

Along the way, a Catalytic converter or two are inserted to reduce emissions. At the places where the larger cast-iron multicylinder pipe is attached to the Catalytic converter there is a part called a flange. There should be a flange on both ends of the Catalytic converter. The flange has a gasket known as a Donut. They are suppose to be good for a long time.

When this Donut shaped gasket is worn out, the exhaust escapes and makes noise. The squeak occurs because the gasket has been rubbed apart and now the joint is metal to metal. When you shift into drive or back into reverse the pipes rub together because the drive-train moves a little.

Try to find a place with a guarantee. These simple gaskets need to be replaced, but you will be paying for this over and over unless you have a guarantee or the exhaust system is braced better.
This may be a result of the accident, that something is not tight, or there is a soft mount in the motor or transmission.

Your sunroof could have blown a fuse that was never replaced from the accident or if it worked it could have blown a fuse for the first time. I hope you are satisfied with my help, Thanks for using Fixya.

Sounds like a catalytic converter to me, disconnect the exhaust pipe before the catalytic converter, then start and run it, it's gonna sounds VERY LOUD, this should stay running now.If it does then you need to invest in a new catalytic converter, you will set off an engine code so that will be expected, get back to me with any questions.....I'M HERE TO HELP!!!

Loud muffler noise up front of vehical.what is

If the noise sounds like your muffler, but isn't coming from the area of your muffler, then you have an exhaust leak upstream from the muffler.

From the front of your muffler, follow the tubing forward to the catalytic converter, then forward to the engine exhaust manifold.

If you start with the car sitting for a few hours to make sure it's cold, you can use your hand to feel for blowing leaks while the engine is running, but chances are you'll be able to hear it. be careful of the catalytic converter itself, as it heats up fast, so check that first.

Once you've found the leak, the fix depends on the emissions laws in your state. If you have none, and the leak is in the middle of the pipe, you can buy pipe patchers (metal preferred) through auto parts stores or catalogs/websites. If you have strict emissions laws, or the leak is at the junction of the catalytic converter and pipe, you'll need to replace the failing part.
