Just had a power steering pump fitted to my mini after 20 miles it packed up again could it be another component making this happen?????
If there is an issue with the power steering racks or steering boxes pressure regulator, yes.. If the regulator has been set at too high a pressure, the additional pressure may damage the pump and not the rack or steering box. also, engine vibration, incorrect fitment, incorrect steering fluid or the wrong fluid flow rate for the pump to steering unit fluid flow may also cause damage. If you fit a 30 litre per minute pump to a 25 litre per minute system, something has to give and it is usually the pump that fails.. Pulley size is also a factor as the pulley size determines the speed at which the pump will rotate and pumps do have a maximum rotational speed. Pulley alignment is also critical as is belt tension. Overtightening the drive belt will cause premature and speedy failure.

Hi from uk not had much to do with the new style mini but will try to help ? is the power steer pump electric ? or belt driven ? did power steer fail suddenly ? is oil reservoir full what did the garage say the fault was with old pump ? any more info/symptoms would help to advise on possible reason for failure a 2nd time??

hi read recent post/reply's re p/steer pump failures ? swoop611 especially sounds could be problem ?? however now you mention metal grating ?when steering right ? i would be concerned about this if this is from wheel area ie turning right means load of car is leaning to n/side with possibility wheel bearing? or cv joint?? which if seizing would cause extra load on steering when driving/turning which may not be apparent whilst p/steer is working ? may i suggest you either ? d i y check these items or better visit a garage/tyre depot and politely? ask if they could check for you and give advice? also are the wheels/tyres standard fitting for your car ? i ask due to having seen so many young drivers fit oversize tyres/alloys on standard small cars with no thought as to uprating the suspension/steering etc also handling of car you are right to suspect after 2 x pumps failure there is some underly cause for this look forward to hearing from you as to what eventually is the problem best of luck

If system is contaminated with any foreign material may need system flush before replacing with new pump
