1994 mercury villager check engine light came on after i put gas in it and the egine has a skip now
Try disconnecting the battery for 2 hours. Then drive for 10 miles so the PCM can relearn. It may run rough for 10 miles.

if the car is stilling running hot check the antifreeze overflow bottle for a crack and to answer your question start the car and get it to normal temp while it is still running you open the overflow bottle fill it to the cold mark and keep adding coolant until all the bubbles are out of the system and put the cap back on right away

your heater core may be getting blocked up, or the thermostat may be stuck open at times. you have a few options here, option 1 and 2 cost about the same, option 1: have the thermostat replaced just so you know its working properly, a 97 will most likely not have a telltale way of knowing if the thermostat is bad or going bad. option 2. have the cooling system flushed at a shop. this will try to clear out and debris in the cooling system that may be blocking passages or the heater core. option 3 is the most expensive. have the heater core replaced, the heater core is what provides heat to the hvac system in the dash. a few other things to check would be vacuum lines/actuator/temperature door on your hvac system.

The diagnostic connector is located on the engine near the starter. However, there are four connectors in that location and without pictures it would be difficult to determine which is the proper one

its the tube going from the egr valve to your exhaust it have carbon build up and you either have to replace it or get a metal coat hanger and clean it out.

If you disconnect the battery you lose the codes, you will have to wait for the engine light to come back on for codes to be read<< There are two ways to check codes, the diagnostic code connector is located drivers side, under dash, left hand side near the fuse box. The second way is to get a hold of a Manuel-can purchase one from parts sore, in the book it should give you a key codes. Meaning you use your vehicle key and follow directions and you will receive blinks on the panel giving you a diagnose-using the blink system and book will tell you what is wrong with vehicle.
One of two things happened, either you got bad gas or was just odd circumstance that happened after getting gas. You have to get a diagnostic review to see what is wrong. 3 ways to do this, one local parts stores do the test for free , depending on parts store and year model of vehicle-plus it is a small little tester and not always accurate, second a licensed vehicle tag inspection business has the real testing equipment-when ever it gets time to have my sticker replaced I always know if there is something wrong with the vehicle, if it does not pass they give me the read out so I can fix it, third a mechanic should have a good testing machine, but they usually charge 50-100 bucks to run the test.
