If you are not parked on an incline when this occurs try another key as it sounds like your ignition switch is not returning to the proper position.Try jiggling the steering wheel the next time and if that works wire-brush the key if it is not BENT and try the process again.

Gear shift stuck on the park position, 1998 ford crown victoria

Are the brake lights working, as a safety feature the foot brake has to be held on at the same time a gear is selected. The lock is an electrical operated solenoid operated on the same circuit as the brake lights, if a fault has developed in that circuit and the brake lights don't work, it won't come out of park, could be the fuse or the brake light switch. Good luck.

Had a similar problem. Solved it two ways first place key in the 3 position move gear to N then start and it will shift easily. Second solution check brake light fuse, it is probably blown replace it and gears will shift OK.

1995 crown vic gear problems/gear shift wont lock

most likely the shift tube bushings are bad- you may have also lost a few screws in the shift tube or they could just be loose. you have to pull the steernig column down to inspect/repair it.
