Gas gauge reads full when underway. However, when

2001 Montana .Gas gauge reads full when underway. However, when stationary the gauge begins to read a fuel level. Perhaps a bad ground?

Most likely it a bad fuel level sensor on you fuel pump. You will have to replace the fuel pump as that is the only way to replace the sensor for you fuel gauge. The sensor is built into the fuel pump. The contacts on the sensor become corroded over time and cause the sensor to malfunction causing your fuel gauge to read full all the time. I have a 2001 Montana extended version that had the same problem. In order to know when I needed to fill the tank, I would completely fill it each time I put fuel in and reset my trip odometer. I would go 400 miles on the tank before I would refuel until we were able to replace the fuel pump.

Many cars do this to discourage gas theft. If the car fuel gauge only shows 1/4 full, a potential thief may not bother to steal 2 or 3 gallons of gas. This is very normal.

If the gauge is stuck on full and you are sure the tank isn't full, you have a sensor sending wrong information to the dash gauge. Most cars now have a single fuel pump and sending unit that can be replaced by a mechanic.

Sounds like at 1/4 reading,the actual reading of the fuel should be empty.Your gauge sending unit in the tank is most likely defective.Many are on these.

Gas gauge always reads full.

Hello John.
The Montana/Venture vans have a problem with the fuel gauge sending units in the early 2000's.
The only cure is to drop the fuel tank, remove the sending unit and replace it.
The fuel gauge sending unit is available separately from the fuel pump.

Gas gage read full when empty and sometimes emty

You have a bad fuel level sensor.The fuel tank needs to come out and the sensor replaced.You don`t have to replace the pump assembly.You can get the level sensor separate.I`m not sure if the parts stores have it but I know the dealerships do.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Most likely problem is a faulty sending unit. Bad news... it's inside the gas tank.

When gauge is pegged at full, usually means a bad ground. Check wires at fuel tank, wiggle around, maybe one came off. The bad news is it is hard to get to without removing the tank. Sometimes you can reach arm in and get to them. Also check body ground at read of van.

My pontiac Montana has a problem with the fule gauge, it will read full and the next it will reads empty, is this the sending unit?

It's the wire to the sending unit. The unit is in the gas tank and if the problem is in the unit, then you have to drop the gas tank to get to it. Check all the wire harness from the top of the tank to the frame. There is a clip from the wire harness from the tank to the frame and it may be corroded there from the salt in the winter. Can not remember but if there is a ground the tank feeds full and when it's got power it reads empty or it's the other way around. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help.
