REPLACE SPEED SENSOR IN 1996 FORD CONTOUR
(For Zetec 2.0L) Set parking brake, jack up car on front driver side. Remove Drivers side front wheel. Crawl under car by firewall. Look up on transmission (mid vehicle), you should see the bottom of the VSS as it screws into the top of the transmission - loosen VSS (turn 1/4 turn). Open hood, Disconnect neg cable from battery (safety first) remove 3 long bolts holding down air intake over throttlebody. Unclip air filter top cover. Disconnect MAF connector. Lift off entire top air assembly, disconnect IAT sensor from under intake tube by MAF and put whole assembly away. You need to remove the rest of the Airbox, close to the firewall is a rubber band O ring holding down airbox, unhook. Then Pull up on airbox. You need to pull hard, it is held on by pins that push through rubber donuts on each side of the box. When it comes off it'll make a huge pop and you'll swear you've broken something - you likely haven't. (It's super easy to put back, just push down - hard to remove though). With airbox off, you will see large wire harness, follow it back - as it reaches under the brake booster and throttlebody, you will see a small offshoot with a connector - that is the VSS connector. Even though it's fairly easy to see it's a PITA to unhook. One-handed shennanigans, and some cursing required. Some small hands or really long needle nose pliers would help. Be careful, don't mess up the harness/connector side. When it's disconencted, go back under car and unscrew VSS and pull up. Then install new VSS. Reconnect nrew VSS to harness connector - hard again but not as bad as disconnecting. Then put everthing back together in reverse
Thanksto the above info, I was able to fix my 1995 Ford Contour VSS problems, however I think this will make it easier for the Contour: With some of the above instructions copy and pasted here: jack up car on front driver side. Remove Drivers side front wheel. Crawl under car by firewall. Look up on transmission (mid vehicle), you should see the bottom of the VSS as it screws into the top of the transmission - loosen VSS (turn 1/4 turn). Open hood, Disconnect neg cable from battery (safety first) Okay at this point remove left Wheel and platic fender guard, look towards firewall and you'll see the other end of the VSS connector, simply press and pull outwardly, this removes the vss, at least it was easier for me. I was told I needed a transmission, because of hard shifts and slipping out of gear, however it was the vss sensor, I just wanted to add that for those of you who are troubled, thanks again to the above post because it gave me hope I tried it and it worked!

SOURCE: 1997 ford contour wont shift
a speed sensor will prevent the trans from shifting if the odemeter isn't working because if the speed sensor is bad and the odemeter and speedometer isn't working the trans has no ideal what gear to be in
SOURCE: I need to know where to find the speed sensor on a
mounted on tranny at end of speedometer cable.
SOURCE: Where is Speed Control Sensor?
Its on your trans .You have to follow the cord down to your trans .
SOURCE: 1995 FORD Contour GL V6 AUTO ; Trans.> speed sensor prob.
The speed sensor signal goes through the speedo cluster and then to the PCM, this is the main computer that controls trans and engine functions, in order to see if the PCM is getting the speed sensor signal you need to install what we call a break out box to monitor the signal and see where it is being lost, it could be the connector ar the transmission, pull it off and make sure the wires are not broken inside the insulation near the connector plastic shell, There is no way to fix this without these checks.

On the lower rear of transaxle, will have three wires and either a rectangle or triangle shaped plug.
