Few things to look for:
Look for any binding...stuff in the track or if it has cable/track damade.
Look for wire damage or corrosion to the motor. Check the connector for corrosion.
A biggie....if the the open/close use of the top is very frequent, then the motor is burnt out.
Last thing, insufficent lube on the track/cable system and the motor has failed prematurely.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the motor. Either use a pen tester (looks like a screwdriver with a bulb in the handle and a wire with a gator clip) and this will let you know if the guts of it are burnt.
Or, use an electrical source of some sort...and apply electric current to the contacts.

Hi,
The first thing I would do, is check for a burt fuse at the box. You said it was running slow ... that's indicative of binding at the joints of the folding points. If it needs lubricated use TRIFLOW spray lubrication as this is a wet spray that dries and isn't messy. It could also mean that your motor was on its last leg and that was why it was slow. If you have easy access to the units motor ... look for an over heat reset button located on the rear of the motor. NOTE: not all of them have one. This is really a matter of going through all of the possibilities. It just takes time and I KNOW you can figure it out.
Best of Luck and I hoped I Helped,

there should be motor sound while the closing and opening movement.if there is no motor sound then motor needs to be checked.also the connections or wire to the motor needs to be checked.check inside the door panel for the motor is it faulty or just the wires to the motor are getting cut in between,. ------- thanks.keep updated.
Hi.
the top motor can be tested energizing it directly. This test is better done by a mechanic, a car electrician or a body fitter, since there is risk to damage more parts in case something goes wrong.
If you have multiple problems, then I do not think the problem is the motor.
Windows and top are controlled by the same module BPM / BCM (body processor module/Body control module). This part is a metal box with two rectangular shaped connectors, and controls different chassis functions.
Regards.
Hi.
It is only one module , I think Jaguar likes to call them BPM, but most seller call the module BCM. In cars that do not have BCM, this functions are controlled directly by ECU (main computer). X types use a BCM (BPM).
The module is expensive (about $800) and must be tested using a diagnostic tool available at car dealer.
Before replacing the module, also check fuses on box, and test windows motor and switches, a combination of problem can cause same conditions.
Here the tool available only to authorized mechanics.
The module is usually located under the glove box (at least this is location on other X Types, including XJ8, I have never done XK8)
The part for XK8 is difficult to find, here a picture of BPM for XJ8:
Hi, please read my previous comment.
While I was typing you gave me a bad feedback. Now the question will be passed to a different expert.
All the best.
Energizing means connecting to power, usually the motor is +12V (double check). In that case all you have to do is connecting to battery cable.
Be careful not to cause short while energizing, or you will blow an expensive (about $100) motor.
The lock instead is tested using a multimeter on Ohms. You read impedance to see if lock is closing or opening.
Regarding reset button, there is none, a Jaguar is not an Ipod.
Goodbye.

2000 XK8 conv. top was slow to close then would not latch closed. Pulled on top to assist and top latch closed on the top of header latch. manually closed rear windows remain open and no motor sound when trying to open top. Need some trouble shoot ideas. Mike
No, not bad feed back? I was just looking for more ideas.Sorry if it came as bad feeback not my intent. Thanks for the add. info and picture.
In energizing the motor direct do you just power the motor directly to a hot source? or is there another way to do it.

Thanks have not heard of re-set button but will look. Check all fuses and switch relys at the fuse panel. When it was slow coming up it acted as if it was low on oil. Motor was strong but laboring. My thoughts are that it has to do with an elect. overload when it got jambed into the latch.
I will keep looking. What is the best way to directly energize the motor?
Mike
No , no re-set button. There are two selinoid appearing units on the top of the pump. Is there a test for those?
Mike
Thanks. If the motor was burned out would the rear windows also fail to close? This is the condition that leads me to lok for an electric problem rather then a motor failure.
What is the procedure to direct energize the motor to check it's function?
Mike
