97 has 4l60 and in 98 some switched to 4l60-e.. which has shift solenoids.. all electric.. the connector on the side will tell you if it's the same or not. A 4l60-e won't shift if the truck takes the non-electric version..
No.. we just went and replaced our 97 chevy transmission...It has to be that year of a truck...97 Yukon, Tahoe, Sierra or Silverado...That is it.. When chevy made that year of the truck they only made that transmission for one year. You will need to make sure that it either a split transmission which means the torque convertor is separate from the bell housing unit. Call any transmission shop they will tell you the same thing. and that transmission are hard to find.

Your going to have to replace the transmission with an older transmission like the turbo 350 or turbo 400. When it's time to get the car e-tested, that's when your going to run in to problems, due to the year your Chevy is. If your Chevy was a 1985 then you could go with the carb system but with being the newer OBD11 system, your going to have an off road only vehicle with that swap. Why would you want to replace the engine with the 350 carb set up??? There are things you can do to tweak the one in your Chevy free of charge.
