2000 Jeep Cherokee Gear Grinding & 4WD Whine sound

I own a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport (Automatic). I have been experiencing 2 problems with it:
1. When acelerating from a stopped position, it feels like the transmission is struggling to shift into the next gear, and makes a loud grinding noise (sounds like right beneath the gear box) before it will get into the next gear (right around 15 - 20mph)

2. Whenever I shift into 4WD, the Jeep starts to make a whining sound, and continues doing so until I shift out of 4WD. The whine sound will actually continue for a few minutes after I have shifted out of 4WD, and usually goes away completely if I come to a complete stop, then accelerate again while in regular Drive gear.

Any ideas?

No-- I doubt you would have room & without seeing what
your referring to ,I think you need special tools to press
them out.

No one, absolutely no one would buy those tools

Maybe a dealer has something the manufacturer
requires a dealership to have

How to put a 95 or 96 jeep cherokee sport in 4 wheel drive. handle is left of the gear shift.

You can change on the run but as a general rule stop to change to 4wd.except 2wd to 4wd high.Just slow down to about 15mph and back off the gas.
2wd high is normal running
4wd high(is full time 4wd)this is slippery roads or muddy roads.
4wd high lock For bad and slower slippery and rocky roads.
4wd low lock is for extreme 4wd conditions
Don't use the last 2 on the main roads or transfercase will be damaged
Hope this helps

Cherokee intermitant grinding noise in neutral

Is it when the engine first starts? It sounds like to me that the starter is getting stuck in the fly wheel. what happens is when you go to start it, the solenoid push's the gear out and spins the gear almost one full action, the grinding noise could be the starter staying engaged after the motor has starter but quickly comes out of it after driving out of it. just a thought.

MY 2005 JEEP CHEROKEE LAREDO JUST STOPED DRIVING

If engine sounds okay, (when you accelerate, it revs up, etc.) then could be a transmission problem. (assume this is an automatic?)

Check fluid level first, if okay, next suggestion would be to change fluid & filter.

When you select a gear, do you get anything, any slight jolt to the vehicle?

If nothing at all, also might check the transmission lever linkage.

Is this 4WD or 2WD? If 4WD, also need to check transfer case setting, make sure it is properly set.

It's grinding very hard when i put it in gear, drive or reverse.

Make sure you have enough fluid, and honestly, regardless of the fluid level, change it and put in new transmission fluid. If it's an automatic, change the transmission filter too. You can try adding some Lucas stabilizer as well. If that doesn't do it, you may be looking at a rebuild or replacement.

Often this is due to faulty starter motor, or faulty ignition block.
