It probably is in the shifter my grandpa has a Malibu and the shifter goes up and down! And you have to put light pressure on the shift button.

This is a shot in the dark since could be many things, but check the brake light switch, you have to put on brake to shift from park, had this happen on a ford ranger once, the switch worked under light pressure as far as lights were concerned but required heavy pressure to shift

Trail blazer gear shift button

Could be the brake switch or the shift lock solenoid. You may be able to turn the key lock to the unlock position, move the shifter out of park, then start the engine in neutral.
The shifter and the shift lock solenoid would need to be inspected.

My 2006 Chevy Impala LTZ is stuck in park. Checked the brake lights, they do come on. Took the console apart and pushed in the spring loaded button on the right side with a screw driver to get it in gear....

probably the shift solinoid is burnt or no power to activate it you should check all fuses this doent run off the brake lights it is a solioid that when activated by pressing the brake pedal releases the lock on the shifter just take a test light ground it and chk the wires leading to solinoid one should have power when you press the brake or it could be oposite that it supplies the ground when pressed

My gear shift button is stuck and will not squeeze in to be able to move it out of park. The stearing wheel is not locked, and the car will crank.

Some manufactures put in a feature that will not let the button be pushed in until the brake pedal is depressed. If this is the case with your vehcle, there may be a fault with the switch on the brake pedal, or the release in the trans shift has failed.

theres a switch that controls the shifter when the brake is applied. try putting the car into gear with the key on accessory, not on. if it goes into gear the switch needs to be replaced.

2006 Impala stuck in park

You should be able to see a box type component on the backside of your brake pedal. When you step on the brake it sends a current to the computer telling it your on the brake and its ok to shift. Also known as shift lock control. You should also be equipped with an override on side of shifter, Maybe a small button to push or slide or even remove to reveal a small white button. Push it in and shift. Good luck.

2006 Chevy Impala stuck in park

When you turn ignition on it releases a cable that is attached to the shifter also the shifter has a solenoid attached to it that is released when you step on the brake. Both times that I had the problem of button stuck and cant shift out of park the solenoid was sticking and wouldnt release .
