This happens when the tank ventilation system gets clogged, or the bottom of the fuel tank is bent inward. When you fill the tank it displaces air as the fuel goes in. It acts like its full because it can't vent the air out of the tank

The system not venting properly is usually the most common source of this issue. Check filler tube/vent tube for any restrictions. Also try keeping pump nozzle part way out of filler tube.If no restrictions found, possible defective tank vent valve on top of tank. Tank will usually have to be removed to access this valve

problem with the purge canister it's under the car on the rear that is connected to the filling hoses big problem with those cars. i just installed a new tank new hoses but put a second hand purge unit and my 2005 echo is spitting back and hard to fill. good luck

this is becoming a common problem, what is going on with your car is that as you fill the fuel tank you have to displace the air inside the tank( as the fuel goes in the air has to come out ) this is done by the purge system, as the fuel goes in the air is displaced threw a purge canaster the canster trapes any fuel vapers that are in the displaced air and as you are driving the car the vapors are burned by the engine, this canister is either pluged or the valve that opens and closes the canister is stuck so as you fill the tank the air can not get out so you get back pressure in the fill neck and this causes the pump to shut off, bottom line you need to have the purge system checked. it might be a bad canister or a bad switch could also be one of the hoses to the canaster, heres the bad news to replace almost anything on the system the fuel tank will have to be removed and that can be expenceve....sorry

Iown 02 hyundai accent gl 1.6l. Had the problem twice. I used to over fill the tank until I had to spend close to $550.00 USD. The problem is when we overfill the tank. the carbon canister gets clogged and it damages a sensor in the assembly called "DMTL". Thia assy is located under the rear driver side of the car to the left and rear of the fuel tank. Once I replaced the carbon canister, sensor and filter the problem went away. if you let it go for a long time you eventually start smelling gas inside the car after fill ups. Good luck.

The reason the gas station pump shuts off is when the fuel reaches the tip of the gas nozzle, so when you are filling your car and the gas nozzle (gas stations pipe) keeps shutting off it means that the pipe that runs to the gas tank is not open completely, what happens is when you pump the gas in the car the supply pipe from the gas tank opening to the tank fills up quickly and this causes the gas station pipe nozzle to shut off, have some body take down the gas tank and have a look at the gas tank opening and also gas supply pipe that runs from the gas filler opening ( on the car body) to the gas tank. I have found with various cars that the speed the gas is pumped at makes a huge difference. Try wiggling the input nozzle around so it may be parallel to the ground, and just experiment. Or just slow down your pumping speed. Sometimes more goes in faster than the fuel tank neck can handle.
