Is it ok to switch tire size from 225/55P17 to P205 70R15 rims and snow tires? Tire calculator shows a 1.69% difference in diameter and suggests up to a 3% allowable difference.

What is the load index of the 17inch tire compared to the 15inch tire? I believe the 225/55R17 has a load index of 97 and the 205/70R15 has a load index of 95 A load index of 97 equates to a load capacity of 730kilograms A load index of 95 equates to a load capacity of 690kilograms So this equates to a decrease in overall capacity of 160 kilograms. For safety reasons, you should never switch to a tire that has a lower load index that what OEM calls for. The sidewalls can start splitting and your tire can fail catastrophically without warning.

Two items to consider when doing that swap...First, the smaller tires must turn faster to go the same speed/distance as the larger ones which will affect fuel consumption and alter speedometer reading. Second, your abs brake system reads wheel speed and having different turning rates may be interpreted as a partial skid which can cause problems. Best to stay with same size on front and rear.

Wrong tire size?

P designates a tire for a passenger car, 225 is the width of the tire in mm, 75 is the ratio of sidewall height to the width (eg thesidewalls are 225*0.75=168.75 mm tall), R is the type of tire (radial), and 16 is the diameter of the tire in inches. Customizing the tires gives you different performance results.

If you want your car to act according to how the manufacturer specified, go back to the stock tires. However, your current tires have a larger diameter than the stock, which means your rims are also larger than stock; you would probably have to replace the rims as well, which can be expensive.

I would stick with your new sizes. Different sized tires will not harm your vehicle in any way. I would also recommend going to a store that offers lifetime warranties like Les Schwab; they are invested in insuring that that everything is fitting correctly so they don't have to refund you anything.

What is the difference between tire size 255/70 and 265/70

Hello Projocs03,

Tires are typically measured tire width (sidewall)/tire ride height/wheel size. The differences of the two tire sizes you published are .4 of an inch difference in width/sidewall. And about .55 in over all diameter which would impact you revs per rotation. Depending on your wheel size.

Attached is a comparison of the two given the variable of 17" rim.

I added the above link so you can research further or change any variables you need to know. However, the most important thing to understand is the impact of your speedometer. Different sizes will have different impacts. For example going to a bigger tire will show a slower speed on your spedo that your traveling.

Good luck

What happens if I put 16" diameter wheels/tires on

Hi, this will lower the centre of gravity of your Jeep, this will in turn make your Jeep handle better on the road, this will also affect your Speedo and mileage slightly. The Speedo will be reading a slightly faster speed and add about 5m to every 1000m actually travelled.

Tire size please

Laura, from factory the car came with 215 x 55 x 17``tires. The actual number is printed on the sidewall.
< This means you have 17`` rims, with 215 mm tire tread width and the sidewall height of the tire is equal to 55% of the tread width. This is referred to as the tires profile...
If by chance you are shopping for snow tires you can install a complete 16`` winter wheel set , tires and rims with the same overall outer diameter as a 17`` set, because the 16 or 17 only defines the hole size in the tire ....however the sidewall height and tread width would be different on a 16``tire.

My 1996 yukon came with p265/75r16 tires. could i put 245/75r16 tires on it and what kind of problems would i have if i did?

Should have no problems at all. 245 is just 2 cm ( about an inch ) narrower than a 265. Overall diameter will be slightly smaller as well which will affect your speedometer but not too much. Spedo will read slightly higher than actual speed.

What size alloys. Ford Calypso 1997

Yes. The last number on a tire size is the diameter of the rim, when it changes so too must the tire. The bigger the tire the more they cost.
You also have to pay attention to the width of the rim, side to side. Somes tires need a wider rim than others, so ask when you are buying the rims what width they need tires to be because wider tires cost more too. Hope this helps.

Tires and rims

Check inside the driver door post for the factory tire size for your truck. It's recommended that your tire size not vary more than 3% of original, due to handling characteristics, and car/truck performance. Keep in mind that putting huge tires on can throw off your speedometer reading, so big tires having fewer revolutions will show a lower speed than you are actually traveling-so watch out for radar traps! Our computer controlled engines are fed info constantly to adjust fuel/air ratio, rpms, etc, and vastly different tire sizes can affect those adjustments and calculations. So, yes, I agree, bigger tires would look much better, but don't go too big. For a formula to estimate tire size and lots of info and advice, go to tirerack website.
