Rear seatbelt stuck behind head rest in locked position
I put a rear facing carseat in the backseat of my 2008 Explorer. Before I tightened the seat belt I pulled the top strap behind the headrest, then proceeded to tighten it, without thinking about the fact that it would be stuck. The carseat isn't in the truck anymore, but when I went to put it back in, I can't move the seatbelt cuz it's stuck draped over the headrest in the tightest position possible and it's locked until I can get it to retract, but I can't get it to retract...if that makes sense! What can I do to either get the seatbelt lock to release, or what? I tried removing the headrest but it won't come out, I don't know what to do and my husband is so angry with me! Like I did it on purpose!!!
Re: Rear seatbelt stuck behind head rest in locked...
Haha we know you didnt do it on purpose, without seeing your problem and the hard to describe issue, i can only recommend to maybe try folding the seat to the cargo position, if that helps. if not, then you will more than likely need to disassemble the rear quarter panel, and unbolt the seat belt retractor from the body of the vehicle. sorry but there is no other way
Re: Rear seatbelt stuck behind head rest in locked...
I man-handled the head rest....I mean really squish, pinched, pulled, contortioned until the belt slipped over the top....an extra hand to pull the belt over would help while you're manuevering the head-rest. I got mine off that way....but I was willing to destroy the head rest....the belt is designed to do what it did!

There is a lock in the center of the rear shelf.
Just insert your ignition key, turn it, [arrows show direction]. This unlocks it.
Then pull forward and down on the rear seat. Done!
You may also notice a pass thru door behind the center arm rest. Useful for skis etc.
You will have to remove the backseat. First the bottom part, it has two pull cords to release the seat. Take that out. Then for the back part, you will have to remove 4 nuts (2 with washer looking things attached and the ones holding the seatbelts) at the bottom of the seat. After removing them, where you had removed the seatbelt nuts, you will have to remove the seatbelt peices. Once that's done, you will have to pull the seat out and up. Behind that, there is 2 round button anchors, which you will have to pull out. Once those are removed, the whole back peice comes out, exposing the rear speakers. They should be 1/4 bolts holding the speakers in. And if you are modifying (not using stock speakers), you may have to cut they wires to replace the speakers.
middle seat belt shouldn't have anything to do with it. The seat locks down for stowage in the rear cargo area. you can pull the release handle on the back of the seat to release it back into the up position.
hello tracieandmia, I am assuming that the seatbelt buckles are just underneath the seat. The rear seat bottem can be removed for access. If you reach under the front part of the seat bottem near each corner and lift up, the seat will release. You will need to give it a little yank and use a little force for it to release. Once each corner is released you can remove the seat bottem. To install the seat, slide it back under the seat back and push hard down on each front corner that you had previuosly pulled up at. You should hear a definite click/lock sound when the catches are locked.
you can remove the bolt that holds the seatbelt to the floor by pulling off the seatpad where the belt goes to the floor and then raise the seat and the belt should reset. this happens on my passenger side rear seat.
To fix that scenario, I have to get to the bolts anchoring the seat belt which can be found under the rear seat. Which a socket wrench, remove the bolt freeing the seatbelt to allow you room to release the lock to pull the belt out from the top of the back seat. You may now push the back seat into its upright position and then refasten the seatbelts with the bolt to it's former position under the back seat.
When I in later times need to lower the back seat, I will either loop the seatbelt around the head rest or tie two belts together allowing for slack in case the belt tightens again when trying to move the seat back to its original position.
