My 2003 Subaru Forrester with 89,000 miles was periodically shaking a lot the other day and I opened the hood and there was a spark coming from the coil pack. The repair place said I need a new one installed. Is this true? I need an idea of the cost and labor time that should be required.

No luck with local dealer. They say that it isn't a warranty issue and TSB's are only for mechanics to be used for trouble shooting. He gave me the number of Subaru Customer assistance. I doubt they will give me a different answer. Oh well, live and learn. Next time - a Toyota Rav4. I have never had a major problem like this with any Toyota or Honda we have owned.

It's likely the coil. Subaru issued a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) on this issue. This is not a recall but you may want to show this to your Subaru mechanic or call Subaru after your repair to try to at least defray some or all of the cost for the repair. The link is below:

Subaru Forester Ignition TSB

Testimonial: "Thank. I wish I had known that. I would have taken it to the dealer. But I will do as you say and call them to see if they will do something for me."

Also, if you replace the plug wires - DO NOT get anything other than Subaru OEM-type.

Can you tow an automatic 2003 subaru forrester by the front wheels?

The Subaru site has the following recomendation. Automatic transmission and CVT vehicles can be towed with all wheels on the ground in an emergency for very short distance (under 31 miles) and at very slow speed (under 20mph). Good luck and have a great day.

My 2003 subaru forester idle very rough. if you open the hood and look at the engine it is shaking like its firing on only three cylinders. I need some help.I changed the spark plugs, gas filter, air...

1) Check all the vacuum hoses for a leak in the rubber hose or a hose that isn't connected. Vacuum leaks cause motors to shake and stumble on acceleration.
2) There's a plastic T connection on the back side of the engine behind and under the air cleaner box. That T connector joins together three air hoses of different sizes and is prone to breaking from heat stress. Only a Subaru dealer will have this part.
3) Even though the spark plug wires are new, you may have a bad one. Don't waste your money on cheap parts; they cost more in the long run.
Good luck!

It probably is the converter. The check engine light has nothing to do with maintenance at all, nor does it really directly concern the engine. The check engine light comes on for emmission purposes. Such as converter, loose gas cap and all kinds of sensors.
