Could be. Might also look into reseting the built in computer system which helps maintain your vehicle. Usually a dealer has to do it. If you dont have the money,.....o2 sensors are not that big of a deal

P0138 and p0158

These codes, po 138 bank 1 sensor 2 shorted to voltage and code po158 means bank 2 sensor two shorted to voltage. these are the two rear oxygen sensors in the exhaust system. there two up frt and two in the rear, check the wiring on the two rear sensors, make sure that the wiring is not cut or stuck between metal. if the wiring is good then replace both rear sensors, when you get them ask for the left and right after the cat sensors. or bk1 s2 and bk2s2. after replacing them reset the computer. go to an auto parts sotre or if you have a code reader you can do it. hope this helps good day.

Miss fires at ideal smells like to much fuel out of exhaust. Runs better at higher rpm. 2000 Pontiac Grand am 2.4L

If it improves with rpm, I would suspect a stuck injector (not closing) causing your engine to run rich, or a bad temperature sending unit. You should check for fault codes (they will do this for free at Autozone). You will most likely have a code for a bad oxygen sensor. Don't replace it until you correct the rich fuel mixture with the bad one unplugged. The rich mixture is the cause of the bad O2 sensor, not the symptom.
I you unplug the O2 sensor the ecm will substitute a generic value, allowing you to correct the real issue without destroying another O2 sensor. They are not cheap.
You can verify a stuck injector cyl by cyl by inspecting the plugs. If they all look the same, you may want to unplug the cold start injector and see how it runs.

Symptons o2 sensors

If your O2 sensors are malfunctioning, the main symptom would be that the Check Engine light will come on. On some vehicles, an O2 sensor circuit shorted to ground can cause a no-start problem.
If the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light is on and there is a code for the O2 sensors, I would like to also advise you that many O2 sensor codes are not caused by the O2 sensors themselves. In many cases, the O2 sensors are only REPORTING the problem. for example, a code P0171 "Oxygen Sensor Lean" code is rarely ever caused by the O2 sensor. It is usually caused by a vacuum leak or a failed Mass Airflow sensor (MAF) or Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor (MAP) or a bad fuel injector. In these cases, repairing the real reason that the engine is running lean will fix the O2 Sensor code without replacing the O2 sensor.

Engine wont stay on when started unless you step on the gas,service engine soon " light comes on.Scanned it and you get code po172 system too rich.

Okay, lets start with you checking the fuel preasure regulator, this is a common problem with these the regulator leaks and the vac line connected to it starts sucking gas into the intake, this causing it to run rich and depending on how bad the leak is it will stall engine at idle, remove the vacuum hose from regulator and start engine then see if gas shoots out the vac connection on the regulator, if it does then replace regulator, hope this helps.583ec1c.jpg

Have 1996 chevy Silverado 4.3 Service Engine Soon Light Stays on took to Autozone & the reader said replace O2 Sensor

A P0147 is caused by a failure in the O2 sensor heater circuit. The heater circuit is used to allow a more accurate reading (for O2 sensor) while system is below normal operating temperature. The only way to properly fix this problem is to replace the O2 sensor, however you can clear the code and it may be a few days before it comes back [and sets check engine light]. This condition is somewhat common on GM vehicles of that age.

Hi

The check engine light is on because ECM (Control Module) detected a fault with your car's system. ECM has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and your car needs to be looked at. You'll need to get the codes checked from a nearby dealer/mechanic. However, it seems that as you are facing surge issue, it can be due to bad plug, bad fuel injector or a bad egr valve. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

2001 Nissan Maxima service engine light stays on code from Auto Zone scanner is PO139 and PO138. What should my next step be to solve this problem.

code p 0138 refers to 2 items
1--heated oxygen sensor(HO2S) 2 bank 1--high voltage ==causes --wiring short to positive --HO2S---ECM
2--oxygen sensor (O2S) 2 bank 1--high voltage ===causes wiring short to positive ---ECM
code p 0139 refers to 2 items
1--- heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) 2 bank 1--slow response ===causes --heating inoperative --wiring--ECM
2--oxygen sensor (o2S) 2 bank 1 slow response ===causes --wiring --- O2S

heated oxygen sensors9HO2S) are in the exhaust manifold before the cat converter
Oxygen sensors (O2S) are after the cat converter
it is indicated that the HO2S is faulty-
check the wiring and /or replace both sensors

My 2002 Ford Windstar van is giving the code ''PO174 System lean bank 2''. Usually runs bad when it is damp, raining or winter, but never stalls out. This time (winter) check engine light on. Van has...

Hi,

Sounds like it could be a bad Oxygen sensor on that bank. check for vacuum leaks first but since it is only on 1 side of the motor is most likly a O2 sensor.

get the engined scanned and look at the reading from that O2 sensor. But if you have more then 100k and it has never been replaced then I would juts replace the front 2 o2 sensors as they are only good for 100-120k. You don;t need to replace the rear O2 sensors only the front 2.
