My mini has a clunking noise when I turn the wheel full lock. What is the problem?

Bad control arm bushings, worn ball joints, worn inner/outer tie rod ends.

When rocking the steering there is usually some noise from a steering system that has a few miles on it especially from the majority of power steering types as not only is the rack slipper bearing likely to make noise but also the hydraulic spool valve and possibly even the rack end bush.
Sometimes the clunking noises can be worrying they are so loud.

If there are steering stops on the lower arms and hubs the noise can be very loud on full lock and a moving vehicle.

There might be track rod problems but there is no point guessing - the car has to be inspected, jacked up and the wheels shook to check for wear and free play and on the ground the steering wheel has to rocked while the steering gear is inspected.

If inspection finds nothing the noise is clearly caused by "acceptable" wear...

Do you have 4 wheel drive ? If you do you "could " have a problem with the transfer case. The noise you describe is indicative of transfer case issues.

sounds like the gear box or sterring rack went out have some one move the wheel look see what is moving and wha tis not

If a clunk is felt in the steering wheel, the MOST likely cause is the I-shaft - not the steering gear. Continue with the correction. This sounds like as wheel bearing going bad. Do any vibrations in the steering wheel>

Loud clunking noise WHERE in the Voyager when WHAT is "on full lock"? It might help to be a little more descriptive.

Knowing Chrysler minivans the way I do, I would assume that you are chasing noises in the front steering and suspension. Those are notorious for all kinds of noise in the front suspension. You need to check the stabilizer links, the stabilizer frame bushings and the upper strut bearings - these are the most common "noise-makers".

If it is making the noise when you have the wheels turned hard to one side and accelerating, then it is most likely a bad CV joint.

Is it a clunk clunk clunk noise? Then you have a CV joint that needs to be replaced. This is called the CONSTANT VELOCITY JOINT, and helps you turn the wheel when it is in motion.

It has ball bearings inside and when the housing wears out, they make that clunking noise.

See your mechanic for a change and see if you can replace both wheels at the same time.

One or both of two issues, get it looked at for possible axle shaft bad, or a wheel bearing. Get it looked at before it gets real bad.

It seems as though one of your front drive axle universals has failed and locked up. The other possibility would be a dry steering knuckle. Thank you, Dana
