Sounds like sunroof is stuck, motor can't overcome load. Cheap test: car off, interior light turned on try to move sunroof, does light dim? If yes motor is trying to move but can't. If light does not dim then motor not getting power.
try this first (cheapest remedy first) open the sunroof fully take key out of ignition shut all doors then put the key in drivers door and hold key over 30 secs to unlock car(windows will go down)then wait 30 secs.then put key back in drivers door and hold key over 30 secs to lock car, windows will go up and the sunroof will close.if the sunroof does not shut properly then we start with motor park switch.....
some of the cable operated sun roofs stretch making the timing of it out of wack, id drop the headliner and watch for any odd movements while it is closing.....
Sorry, no home repair here...be prepared to spend upwards of $200 to repair...Go to a body shop and have them look at it...DO NOT GO TO THE DEALERSHIP! Good Luck
check the track to see if there are any damaged or worn teeth that made it jump out just a bit if so replace, also look for the limiter switch on the motor to make sure it didn't get bent a bent switchwill stop it prematurely if not you can re adjust it. if helpful please rate
My 97 Grand Prix sunroof tracks are offset. My driver side track is in the closed position, and the passenger side track is in a half open position. When the problem happened I was closing the roof and heard a hard clicking. It stopped working from that moment on. The tracks werent offset as much as they are now before I took the glass off. When I removed the glass, the passenger side track sprung back about 6 inches. The motor works, but the tracks only move about a half inch forward and backwards. Its cable operated and my guess is that one side jumped the track or a gear or something. Anybody help?
I had the same problem. It was a bent rod on the regulator, which burned out the motor. Easiest way is to switch out the whole assembly, the motor and the regulator. Mine is working just fine now. I am a female and was able to switch it out just fine i just had to have someone else hold the window in the right positions to get to the bolts on the window.
