If it is not necessary to replace the coolant tube in the intake manifold if it is leaking antifreeze, how do you fix the leak even if you do flush out the system and put green antifreeze in? I am also curious as to how I go about verifying that the leaking coolant tube is in fact the problem? If i look inside the manifold will i be looking for something specific? Is the coolant tube plastic or is it a rubber tube?

I'm assuming you are talking about the 3800 v6 engine?
I don't know what hose or tube you are talking about either. There is not any coolant going through a hose in the intake manifold. There are two bypass coolant elbos on the passenger side of the engine going into the intake and timing cover from the intake and the heater core. Is this what you are talking about.
And NO green coolant in a 97 Dexcool only!

Intake Manifold gasket~

Replacing intake manifold gasket:
Replacing the intake manifold gasket, I used the tube kind, it's a make it youself for about $6 (it's blue and the consistancy of toothpaste) follow directions carefully! You can get a tube at Autozone or any car parts store. Has been working great. Just ask the cashier for the make it yourself kind of intake manifold gasket. Sorry, I don't remember the name of it, it's been that long...lol...

As for the Intake Manifold leaking coolant....It could, but shouldn't. One of the largest problems I've seen for coolant to leak out the Intake Manifold has been due to pressure in the system somewhere... Check the classic area:
Water pump- look for either water seapage and/or coolant. You'll know if it is because you will see real water either coming out of the water pump leak hole or under the thermostat. Most of the time coolant will pool where your heater hose runs in the intake manifold.

Mentioning heater hose. Check for leaks, holes, and/or cracked heater hoses. In-addition to the water pump, heater hoses...Check the transmission system, exhaust system, fuel system, radiator system, A/C system, secondary fan (located above the water pump housing), and thermostat.Also, check all electrical connections....Hummm....This is almost the entire workings of the vehicle.

NOTE: "It seems to be an infinity kinda thing... Once one thing starts to fail and is ignored, you are bound to be fixing a chain of event failures. Therefore, Do not ignore even the smallest problem or you'll be bound for life in repairs...."

Lower manifold leak 2004 chevy
If the lower (intake) manifold is leaking, which is very common, then you should either have an external antifreeze leak, or antifreeze into the oil. Oil will not go into the antifreeze. The coolant used in this car (DexCool) does, however, form an oily substance on the surface over time. I would recommend having the antifreeze flushed out, and the reservoir cleaned.

When is the last time you had the radiator flushed. Check for leaks on the top of the engine, if you see antifreeze you will have to replace the upper and lower plenum gaskets. I even replaced the plenum to get a steel guard for the EGR valve. This is a known GM defect that affects ALL 3.8 liter engines. also, do you see antifreeze anywhere on the engine or ground? Another known problem are the plastic coolant elbows on the front of the motor (where the pulleys are). They leak and look like an intake manifold leak. I would also replace the thermostat. Check the overflow and see if you are losing antifreeze on a regular basis.

Hello roxanna surf: My name is Roger and I will help you. The problem could be one of several problems. GM has a problem with the intake manifold gaskets leaking coolant useually external but can leak internal also. Check at the corners of the intake manifold where the manifold meets the heads. If you see green or orange drops of coolant or a slimmy build up than the intake manifold gasket is leaking. Idf the leak has been ongoing for some time and the engine has overheatedI would also look at a head gasket, warpped head or even a cracked head as a source of the problem. have your cooling system pressure tested, that should give a place to start as to where the leak is and how much it is going to cost to have the problem fixed

My 2000 Olds Silhouette leaks coolant.
First is to check to see if it's your intake gasket, pull the dip stick and look at the condition of the oil. Look for excessive sludge and milking, look under the oil cap and look in to the valve cover, also pull the PVC valve and look at the condition. Check to see if there is sludge and milking, if there is then you have antifreeze leaking in to you engine crank case which is very bad. The antifreeze is corrosive to the engine bearing and will soon cost you a new engine if there is no indication of antifreeze in your crank case, then it's a leak somewhere else through out your cooling system. If you see the leak from the out side then that's good, it may just be a bad hose clamp that needs to be tightened. If your not sure and want to buy some time, add about 3 table spoon of common kitchen Black Pepper. The black pepper will work it's way throughout the cooling system and will plug up the leak for now and the great thing about pepper is that it will not leave any residue when you flush out the system, not like the radiator stop leaks out in the market. Good luck and keep me posted, it could be the heater hose to the heater core.

are you losing antifreeze and not sure where its going?? if this car is a non supercharged 3.8 it will most likely be the upper intake manifold leaking antifreeze into the egr passage,this in turn will put antifreeze into the cylinders and act just like a head gasket problem,its a very common problem with these engines.what happens is near the throttle body in the intake itself there is a coolant tube and an egr tube next to each other and after a while the plastic intake starts to break down from the antifreeze and it starts dumping antifreeze in to the egr tube,this is caused by the dexcool antifreeze (the orange stufff) i suggest flushing the system and putting green antifreeze in it,but do not mix the two-if mixed it will gel up and cause problems,hope this helps

A leaking manifold could cost you a VERY expensive repair. I recommend getting it fixed as soon as you can. And with the antifreeze...seeing how it it a GM it should take DEX-COOL. But look under the hood and look for a white sticker and it should say "This vehicle takes DEX-COOL coolant. Do not mix with any other coolant" and if not the cap for the coolant should say so. If so, then obviously you need DEX-COOL or universal coolant. Universal will not harm anything, but I would use the manufacters reccommendations just on the safe side.

This is usually the lower intake manifold gasket. The problem you are describing is due to a large air gap/bubble in your cooling line. This usually happens when the manifold gasket begins to fail.

You can add coolant, and bleed the coolant system (make sure to get out all the air to eliminate the no heat/overheat problem), but unless the lower intake manifold is fixed, it will probably contunue to leak (it can be a very very hard to detect leak). There are UV dyes u can add to the aNTIFREEZE TO CHECK FOR LEAKS THAT AREN'T OBVIOUS. But the worst case for this is that coolant gets in to the oil, and can ruin your engine. Check your dipstick for milky, creamy oil, a sign that there is coolant in the oil. Get it fixed immediately if this is the case, or you will ruin the engine.

There's info online about doing it yourself, but it's a bit invlved if you are not a mechanic. Expect to pay from 800 to 1200 to get it fixed at dealer or mechanic.
