'99 Saturn SC1 with intermittant check engine light P0341

I just aquired a '99 Saturn SC1 (only 88k miles) but it has an intermittant check engine light. The car runs great and the light seems to not be performance related. The local shop read the computer code as a P0341 but he has checked everything out and even replaced the ignition module with no success. Wikapeda says this car doesn't actually have a cam sensor and ''Instead, the DIS module watches when the #4 spark plug fires on the compression cycle and fakes a Cam sensor signal from it''. Any ideas wouod be appreciated. The shop is recommending taking it to the dealer as he's out of ideas.

A p0341 code mean cam reference performance, really it means you have a secondary ignition problem,,,,like a bad ignition module
a bad crank sensor
a high resistance spark plugs,do not use bosch platinum plugs in these cars
high resistance spark plug wires,,,i work at the dealer and the first thing we do is replace the spark plugs and wires if that dont work we replace the crank sensor,if thatdont work we reaplce the ignition mondule, and by then your fixed and you started with the cheapest items first,,,i would try plugs and wires and a crank sensor,,,,wires $50 plugs $14 crank sensor $37

I have a ticking sound in the engine.the maechanic i went to said it could be something loose in head or something and i might need it rebuilt.. if so how much do that usually cost?? 1993 saturn sc1

Honestly those engines are a dime a dozen, my local pick apart has a bunch of them-my 99 saturn has 180,000 miles on it and it uses oil (they all do, it seems)-change your oil, religiously, and if it doesn't leak, use synthetic-you can use 10w-30 instead of 5w-30, and make sure you use a good oil filter, like a Puralator PureOne or a K&N, Bosch-one with an anti-drainback valve. If it runs well, you should get lots more miles out of it, a good rebuild will cost upwards of $1700 but you can get a good used engine for as little as $200 if you look around. Just don't let it run low on oil, the rings are a bad design and cause binding which causes oil consumption, and eventual wear and failure.

My service engine light is on in my saturn sc1, it is a 2000 with 80,000 miles. I have changed to oil, spark plugs , wires and gas cap. but yet it keeps dying while driving... do you have any idea what is...

the first step is to have someone hook an analyzer to it and find out what is making the service engine light stay on. that way you have a plan instead of blindly changing parts hoping to accidentally fix it.
it runs for a while, so it would seem that is is suffering a fuel starvation problem or something is heating up and knocking out the ignition. intermittent fuel pump, something restricting the fuel supply, ignition module. there is a sensor in the back of the block, behind the starter, which causes random shut offs as it fails.

11. Trans axle Codes present

Saturn Sc1, Sc2, SL1, SL2 Automatic Transmission codes when turning right after a reset or when hitting third gear. Intermittant dash lights dead, fuel pump failure and check engine light says various codes having to do with car starting in gear. Mine had a bad ignition switch which burned up the wires connected to the automatic transmission start satety switch. On the back of the transmission a black plastic device connected to the shifter cable. You must remove the black plastic shield from the upper wire to see if the wires inside are burned on the top connector that has six wires. If they are get a junkyard replacement connector and wires. Replace the ignition switch first to avoid same problem.

Car is putting at an idle when gas is pressed runs smoothly

sounds like either you have 2 of the wires crossed.........one is loose....probably #1 or your #1 plug needs regapped or is not tight and losing seal....all will cause a misfire and set the check engine light

The codes do not necessarily indicate any failed parts. You have to troubleshoot the system to figure out why the light is coming on. It might just be a loose wire somewhere. What codes have you been getting?

My 99 saturn sc1 is having electrical problems. The tach and speedometer drop to zero then hesitate on the way up to operating speeds. The lights kinda of dim and then every thing runs alright for a few...

the first thing i would do is to have the computer scanned for codes, this will help in finding the problem,it could be a alternator or a short or a loose connection ,

Saturn engine using oil

the oil is almost certainly being burned in the engine, this means the piston rings have lost there seal, u will need an overhaul of the engine.
