I have a 1999 Mercury Sable. The only problem I have had with the car is the serpentine belt. It started 3 months ago . . . the engine was overheating and the belt was shredding. I bought a belt tensioner and a new serpentine belt -- but that did not fix the problem (the belt shredded 5 days later). Then I bought an idler pulley and another new serpentine belt -- but that did not fix the problem and the belt shredded again within a day. Finally I bought a new water pump and that fixed the problem. However, 3 months later I had the serpentine belt shred again . . . can anyone give me some ideas as to what is wrong? My mechanic says it is the water pump pulley because it has a small 'chunk' missing out of it on the rim and that is the reason the belt is shredding . . . . however, when I went to purchase the water pump pulley the man who sold it to me said that it does not matter that there is a 'chunk' missing because it will not affect the serpentine belt. Please help!! . . . . I am adding on to this problem AND POSTING AGAIN. . . I replaced both the water pump pulley (has NO 'chunk' missing now) and the serpentine belt yesterday . . . TODAY the belt shredded again . . . it appears to be sliding slowly but surely to the edge and the rim of the pulley is shredding it up . . . PLEASE HELP!!

Take the belt off and carefully check to see if any of the pulleys are out of line and check to make sure they spin smooth and true check for bearing wear and noise in any of the pulleys cause it sounds like simply there is a pulley out of line

Can I add a comment if this isn't my question? Actually a question. Just in case this mite be the reason for my problem with the belts.(fraying and shredding) What if a pulley IS out of line , how is it fixed and what is an approx. cost..Thx Sandy

Usually if there is a pulley out of line it would be a bad bearing in the pulley, however without looking at it and knowing exactly which one is the problem it's hard for me to tell you how to fix it properly or how much it will cost. When you replaced the tensioner and the idler pulley if you got cheap parts they could be bad again. If the power steering pulley is bad the pump needs to be replaced but on the power steering pulley check to make sure that the center of the pulley where it's pressed onto the shaft is flush if the center of the pulley and the shaft are not flush that needs to be fixed. If the alternator pulley is out of line either the bearing in the alternator is bad or is somehow bolted on wrong which is doubtful. other than that is hard for me to say without seeing it. Keep me posted on the situation.

Replace the damaged pulley. A imbalance will cause the belt to ride over the edge of the pulley and SHRED the belt. The belt must stay in the middle of the pulley even when the RPM causes it to want to wander in the direction of rotation. Watch the belt as someone revs the engine (wear protective glasses).

Service engine soon light came on my 1999 mercury sable

It means that the computer has detected a fault. You have a couple of options. You can buy an inexpensive code reader for about $50 and pull the codes yourself. You can call your local parts store to see if they can do this for you. You can bring your vehicle to a local shop and have them run a diagnosis. There is usually a charge for this. Let me know what codes you have and I'll be happy to help you further.

is the a/c working ok??? shredding the belt may be cause by the a/c compressor problems. the "chunk" maybe not, but shredding tells me something does not spin when it should. I dont know why the mehanic put a new pump on that had a problem with the pulley, it should be smooth. anyhting that the belt runs should be smooth and east to turn, make sure that all of the grooves are clean, no remnants of the old belt.

Car is running hot occasionally and the serpentine

Well there's only part that has to do with the cooling system and serp belt - the water pump!! Maybe it's starting to seize or has too much play. Either way, when you change the water pump, replace the thermostat and flush the system very thoroughly, those 98-99's are notorious for rust build up. Make sure to pull the heater hoses off and flush the heater core too. After all said is done, purge the coolant and make sure there is heat from the blower. If not you're going to have to replace the heater core because that gets clogged sometimes when flushing.

Mercury sable 2002 serpentine belt change

There are also two serpentine belt types for the 2002 sable. The S and U type engine. Take the old belt with you the the parts store. As for the diagram, I googled it under images and about a dozen correct ones came up. Remember the 2002 sable is the same as the 2002 Tarus.
