Noise coming from rear

My 1996 Grand Prix has 177,000 miles on it. As you drive the car, it sounds as if there is a loud noise coming from the back of the car. It does not make the sound until you reach 25-30 MPH and gets louder the faster you go. The sound reminds me of the sound worn tires make when you get that 'whirling' noise, but the tires are in great shape (only have 15,000 miles on them with no uneven wear on the tread. I just replaced the mufflers a few months ago and there are no holes in the exhaust, so I ruled that out. I had thought that maybe the half shafts may be starting to go, but the sound permeates from the rear and not the front. Any idea what might be causing the noise?

Thank you for your assistance

Bryan

Probably a rear wheel bearing, jack up car and block it up, grap each wheel and shake firmly if a wheel wiggles
the wheel bearing is worn out.

Testimonial: "Exactly what was wrong with it. I changed the unit today and the noise disappeared. Thank you so much!!"

My2005 pontiac grand prix makes a loud airplain noise in right front. if i turn it pops and sounds like the trans is coming out ans shift hard untill i turn off engine and then goes back to org noise

It sounds like you have a bad CV axle and if it has been like that for a while then you could also have a bad wheel bearing. Due to the fact that servicing these components requires disassembling the steering and suspension system on that side of the vehicle, this procedure should be performed by a qualified technician.

My 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee is making a grinding and thumping noise in the rear. I can't distinguish if its coming from underneath or in the rear wheels. The thumping and grinding only happen when I coast,...

Check the rear universal joint on the drive shaft for wear or evidence of rust. Take hold of the driveshaft and check for excessive play. Check for excessive play in the rear axles and look for leaks from the seals while you have the rear tire off. Hopefully the noise is not related to an internal issue with the rear differential.

Weird noise in front of car

How would changing the rear pads fix a noise in the front? Take the front wheels off and look for excess rust on the discs or grit in or on the pads. It sounds like you might be competent enough to take the calipers off (it's not very hard). If the noise gets louder with speed, it could very well be the bearings. This is much harder to do yourself (yay FWD), and you might want to get it towed so you don't damage the hubs, etc. Just shaking the wheel probably isn't enough to diagnose bad bearings.
