Hello, i need instructions on how to wire a replacement solenoid in my 1995 ford ranger pickup, 4 cyl. The directions in the package only account for 3 wires and i have 4 wires going to my origional solenoid, which ones go where?

  • reallivingfo Oct 21, 2009

The original Solenoid had 3 posts and 4 wires, the new solenoid has 4 posts, 2 large and 2 small, but the directions only account for 3 posts. It says if the original unit used three posts the don't hook up 'I' terminal. But i have 4 wires. I have tried every combination i can think of except using the 4th post.
I have power but the truck won't start.

Thanks so much, but i still don't know how to hook up the other 2 terminal wires that are either the wrong size and need to be re-terminated, or i need to re-experiment with the two smaller terminals. The directions that came with the new solenoid must be incomplete. i have the double ended battery cable, the ignition wire(i think) with a small end, the starter wire and another one that is wrapped with the ignition wire that i don't know what it's for. Thanks again

The two large posts, one is live from the battery, one goes to the starter live. The small posts the posts marked i nedds power from your key switch and the left over post provides power to the ignition system only while the key is in the start position.Hope this helps.

The only way to kmow for sure if you have the wrong solenoid is to check the to small posts with an ohm meter and see if they have continuity.if they do ,then you need to add a ground to the one marked i,if they don't then just don't hook any wireing to the i post. The proper solenoind will have continuity from the s terminal and the base [mounting surface] and does not need a ground but it has to be bolted on to work.

Starter solenoid???? 2 large posts and 2 small posts on old one or 2 large and 1 small? the one large wire goes to the starter(rear post), all the others goes on the front post. little wire goes on the little post, if the old one has 4 posts, then you have the wrong solenoid.
