Your cams have a what looks like a square on them . find it and face them with the dimples on them up. then use a flat edged ruler to make sur you have them right. then turn no.1 cylinder top dead center. then take and put your chain on your exhaust sprocket and point the dimple up do the same with the intake. tighten down the torx bolts and recheck! it took me 3 times but its better than the $300+ tools and car runs great. if need be look up some of the e36 groups on line.

There should be plated links on those chains too. There is an index dot in both cams on each head that set at the twelve o'clock position.
