Loss of power when under 2000rpm wont accelerate unless I give it high revs. no fault codes being shown and engine man light has now gone off/ reset - still have problem - will run happy with lots of power once above 2000rpm in fifth and sixth gear but will splutter and cough out smoke when revs drop lower than 2000rpm. Idles fine no prob ?

If you checked as suggested for vaccum leaks and have no improvement or only little... Assuming here its KE-Jetronics fuel injection.... on the excellerator linkage is a microswitch that gets activated when the excellerator hits idle position (decel fuel shutoff)... it has an influence on your idle quality, also the electronic component in your air/fuel mixture body (Airflow potentiometer) could be the 'guilty' party aswell as your Idle valve (on single belt engines) that is stuck between the inlet pipe of number 3 and number 4. Anyway i hope this helps to locate the problem

here is something to try
keep some cold water with you and the next time it happens very quickly get out and pour the water on the crankshaft sensor then restart. If it starts right away without the usual two minutes than you will need to change this sensor. The sensor is easy to find you will see a wiring harness around the crankshaft pulley(the large one at the bottom the basically runs all your accessories like the p/s pump, alternator, water pump). Try to famaliarize yourself as to the location of the sensor first so that you can try to restart it within about 30 seconds.

have you tried cleaning out the throttle body as i had a similar problem and this worked

take it to an audi mechanic and reprogram the computer. it cost around $35 dollars.

Sounds like you have a plugged up catalytic converter. You cant clean them it will need replaced. If it is the 4cyl engine, the converter is the exhaust manifold on the front of the engine.
