How can i tell if my crank shaft sensor is bad?

I have a 2004 dodge dakota and i think my crank shaft sensor is bad, because when i go to start it have to pump the gas to get it firing, also when i am just sitting still i can only rev it up to 2000rpms before it over revs, and when i drive it up the road it jerks from over reving to soon. so i need some help am i correct about my problem if not what might it be?

If the crank sensor fails it will probably stop the engine. I have known a diesel engine continue running with a failed crank sensor but it was virtually undriveable and sounded really rough.

Pumping the loud pedal isn't likely to be very helpful whatever is wrong. Pedal pumping is for older cars with a carburettor that isn't in good order.

you need to ck some basics you could have a vacuum leak which would hide during warm up but cause havoc when hot,the leak would cause high idle then your pcm would try to lower idle to spec thru use of idle control motor causing surging idle ,also fuel pressure needs to be checked while acting up,may be more cost effective to pay for an hour of diagnostic.

You may need a transmission flush, if one of the valves sticks in the transmission it may not make a quick decision to shift when in between gears. Worst case ...this may be a precursor to worse problems, like a transmission rebuild.

2004 Dodge Dakota crank sensor wiring short. Where is the most common short found.

Hi,

a short would occur where a missing resistor should have been placed on a basic generic circuit. So the most common short would be in a place with a missing resistor of some type (ie a light bulb, led or actual resistor).

Thank you.

Have a 1999 dodge dakota sport 4 wheel drive with a 5.2 liter motor 158,000 miles my problem is every 3 or 4 days when i go to start it it in the morning will not start after about 5 or 6 times cranking...

a vehicles crank shaft sensor sends a signal to computer, as to tell what revolution the crank is on. you may not get a check engine light. check injectors for leaking in to cylinders, it can cause an excess amount of fuel in cylinder. this may be causeing the no starts and flooding smell. if it starts good warm then check the injectors for leaking. good-luck!! you may also have a bad coolant tempurature sensor. symtoms of a bad cts are--poor cold idle, stalling, slow idle speed, cold hesitation or stumble, poor fuel milage. ( will also ****** timing). its hard to say with out being there, so check out above. good- luck!!

What is a crank shaft position sensor, how do i know if its bad and is it hard to replace

the crank sensor tell the computer were the engines crankshaft is positioned so it can make a spark and squirt fuel at the right time.its mounted in the bell housing near the top of the trans. its fairly east to change.there is also a cam sensor under the dist cap, real easy to change, both will give you the same problem [no start] if bad.

Where is the crank shaft sensor locate on a 1998 dodge dakota 2.5

Should be bolted right before the transmission (it has a wire connected to the harness) on the upper side of the engine (near the interior). See Chilton manual 20404.

2004 dakota won't start

sounds like a crankshaft position sensor..fairly common problem on these 3.7 engines..check for fault codes in engine controller..can mbe hard to get out of engine block..seize in..sometimes have to come out in pieces..it is located on passenger side rear of engine..1 bolt holds it in..3 wire connector..below exhaust manifold in side of block..fairly inexpensive part..recommend dealer part
