I am having trouble with my 1969 Triumph Spitfire turn indicator and brake lights. The brake lights operate intermittantly and only when the ignition switch is on. The turn indicator lights do not work. I have traced the wiring and all appears to be correct. Indicator switch, flasher, brake switch, fuses, voltage regulator, ignition switch are all new. Any ideas? Mine have done exactly the same. worked perfectly before but stopped doing so on the day it was booked in for MOT! Looking at the wring diagrams, it seems that the hazard light circuit is linked to the stop lamp circuit. I noticed my hazards have been playing up lately so there's the starting point.

If I sort it, I'll post the solution. Point of note - my brake lights have never worked with the ignition turned off, only when on. I've had five Triumphs - two 1500 Spits and three Sprints and they were the same regards this.

Okay, after a bit of tinkering yesterday afternoon, I came across even more melee on the brake light front. Are you sitting comfortably..?

To get a fresh starting point (think of Windows Restore) I disconnected and removed the recently-fitted alarm. Bypassing the brake pedal switch, I can get one (driver's side) brake lamp to work but only when the lights are turned on. But, the main rear lights go off also. It gets better - if I turn the ignition on, the rear lights come on and the brake solitary brake light goes out! Better still, I have some kind of 'double positive' thing going on with the rear lights as when I remove one of the connectors at the lamp holder, it still works. Whichever one I remove, the rear lamp stays on. Obviously it goes out when I remove both but with all connected and with the removal of the lamp holder (to break the earthing part of the circuit) it still stays on.

I downloaded a great little Triumph wiring diagram which will be useful once I scribble out all the distracting US wiring parts. It's on

Oh, off to buy a fire extinguisher...just in case.

    Okay, update.

Discovered I can get everything working as normal..but only when the dash switch for the parking/main lights is on. Basically, the reversing lights, indicators and brake lights only work when the main lights are 'on'. Ignition on or off makes no difference.

    Another try tomorrow.

My 1969 triumph spitfire has been running fine but lately has started suddenly cutting out and losing power under heavy uphill loads. When this happens it always blows oil and smoke out aroumd the bol

time to rebuild motor or replace it. The smoke your seeing is pressure from the cylinder escaping around the piston rings into the crankcase and venting out the covers

Hello i am working on a 1978 triumph spitfire 1500 and replaced master cylinder. the brakes work but the brake lights do not. i replaced the bulbs and didn't see any blown fuses.....can you give me...

sounds like the brake light switch is bad or not making contact when the pedal is pushed. check with a meter the switch and also make sure it is getting pushed in when pedal is pushed. could also be a disconnected or broken wire to the switch.

Because it must be replaced I would like to know the measures of the tires for Triumph Spitfire MK 3 1969 and the necessary pressure of air.

The tire size is printed on the sidewall of the tire. If the tires are really old (like as old as the car) You will not find what you need on the tire. The tire size is a series of numbers somthing like P195/70R13. If they are really old they might say somthing like 5.00x13. As for air presure the new tires will have that on the side wall too. Should be about 32psi.

How do i wire a smiths tachometer in a triumph spitfire 1500

easy... remove the mechanical tach and fit the light from the old one to the new eletric tach. Next run a wire from the back of the tach connection that looks like a small pole and run that to your ignition coil - negative side. Also make sure the ground wire (black) is mounted to one of the install bracket posts that hold the tach in place behind the dash.

I have a 1976 Triumph Spitfire 1500. It will ...

On older model vehicles we start having lots of electricle issues. the current flow gets interupted and broken because ALL of our GROUND wires get corroded where they are screwed to the body or frame. it is important that these connections get sandpaper shiny cleaned and tightly screwed backin. solves many issues.
